Developers should know the F-word wasn't around in pirate times
I know I'm probably the only one, but I can't stand all the foul language being employed in most RPGs todaty. It doesn't make it more entertaining, or even more "realistic". Pirates didn't even have the F-word around to use. It is getting such that I will probably have to stop playing them. I have kids in the house and it is hard to play the game with no sound or with headphones.

Feel free to take some pot shots at me... :-)

That's a fairly naive assumption. The f-word has been around, in popular usage, since at least the late middle ages, long before pirate times, and it's first use was as a verb meaning to have sexual intercourse. Assuming by "pirate times" you mean the mid to late 18th century, the word would have been in fairly common usage, with other meanings, presumably by the lower echelons of society, in particular. How do you think pirates spoke? "Goshdarnit and blast it to the depths"? Not likely. They were some of the most despicable and deplorable human beings on the face of the planet. It stands to reason that every other word leaving their mouths would be a profanity, even if the Hollywood, kid-friendly depiction of pirates doesn't show it. Hollywood generally tends to leave out all the ra.pi.ng and brutal torture, too, doesn't mean it didn't happen. I agree that the word may not have been used to have many of the meanings shown in the game, but it would, at the very least, have been used to describe the act of sexual intercourse, and probably to describe the act of hitting someone.

Not that any of that is relevant in a fantasy game set in it's own world, whose characters only merely resemble real-life pirates. This is a world created by the developers, not based on any historical fact, therefore they can choose to have their characters say whatever they like.

People in the early modern era were disgusting all round: Malnourished, stupid, in constant low level pain from parasites, always on one end of violence.

Neverending slapstick comedy of swearing, dysentery and true religion.

Too true. That's why they make better entertainment than us.

Krakens and stone golems weren't around either...

M rated game is rated M for a reason.

Yes, thank you all for your replies. I apprecaite that you were civil. I just personally do not cuss, not do I want to hear cussing in a game. If I didn't play "M" rated games there would be no RPGs to play. I have played RPGs for over 25 years and it is only recently that games have become so vulgar. They were just as fun in the past without the profanity.

Thank you for clarifying the early origins of the f-word. Since I do not use it or hang around with folks who use it, I was not aware of just how far back it went.

You are wrong.

Sorry, that is not the developers fault! The game was made by a german developer (who also did gothic) - and there isnt a single "FICK DICH" in the german voice over. The german is the original language - blame the english dubbing company that added "F...".

It's possible that the game was written, or at the very least, recorded in English originally, as is often the case these days, regardless of the native language of the developer. In such a case, it would be a poor translation to German, rather than the other way about. Seeing as I don't have any facts about how the localisation was handled, I couldn't say one way or the other. What I could say is that it seems unlikely that the a localisation team would be given such free reign to add as much profanity as there is in this game if it wasn't intended to be there in the first place. I would also say that it seems quite likely that such language would be removed from a German localisation in order not to offend their draconian censorship ideals.

Well OP, you are in the great minority here.

I would guess the majority of people don't care either way about profanity in games, and nearly all the rest like myself welcome and enjoy it. The tiny piece of the pie that is left belongs to the religious fanatics and people like yourself who for whatever reason don't like hearing it.

Unless this thread was meant to vent your frustration, which is most likely the case, you probably won't be very successful in championing a great change in game development.

It is a part of gaming these day. Just like money hungry DLC, and console kid friendly shooters. You'll have to accept it or move on to something else.

I saw a movie that had bad words in it also

Heard once that the F-bomb started as an acronym for "Fornication Under Consent of the King." Not sure if it was a sort of population control or a state allowed rape of some sort, i.e. people of rank having their evil fun with the peasants. Also, not sure if true.

*meh, quick google search found this as false. Interesting none the less.

Germany takes the opposite approach to the US, nudity and cursing aren't a huge deal while violence in movies and especially games provokes a someone think of the children!
