How bad is it?
So I heard this game was pretty bad but exactly how bad is it? I can look over some flaws even boring gameplay sometimes but why is this game so bad according to everybody. Also which is beter, this or the first game cause I have both?

Not sure where you heard that, but you heard wrong. Both are good games. The first game is more difficult, in my opinion.

Looking at the reviews on the store page indicate bad reviews. It has a 69 Metacritic score indicating it's average. There are lots of reports of the game not being balanced and that the combat is naff. So, the OP has raised a genuine question - how bad is it? You think it's good which is fair enough.

It's on sale at the moment and I was thinking of buying it but I;ve read plenty to indicate it's not that good of a game.
I beat it this past weekend after 30 hours of game play. The combat was easy compared to Gothic, Gothic 2, Risen...the final boss fight was too easy (on easy difficulty). I found no serious bugs during my play through. It's not an all-time great, but it's certainly a good, fun game.

Hmm, you may have convinced me to part with £3.
Before you do, Gothic and Gothic 2 are my favorite RPGs ever. So I'm somewhat biased. Yes, they were buggy and combat was clunky, but I really liked the formula. Those games were far more difficult than Risen and anybody complaining about difficult combat obviously never played Gothic 1/2.

Piranha Bytes knows what they're doing. That carried over into Risen and Risen 2. You can see how their proprietary engine has developed over time through all 5 games (including Gothic 3).

I also like the Assassin's Creed series, but have not got to playing Black Flag yet.

I think I tried Gothic 3. Quite liked it but never finished it. I have also tried the 1st Risen and grew bored with that too.

Anyway, I've gone and bought it now. If it's rubbish I've only lost a few pounds.
I didn't care for Risen 2 when I tried it last year. I played for 2 or 3 hours and then realized that I had made two big mistakes. (Sorry for the spoilers.)

1. Check your inventory for a ring. It should give you +5% experience/glory.
2. You'll start with an NPC who is looking for her father. Save this quest until the very end; use her to help you clear all the monsters on the island first. Doing it solo at the start of the game is nearly impossible.

After fixing those two things in my second attempt, I found myself playing until 3 in the morning. So give it a real chance and it can become a pretty enjoyable game. Cheers.

Ok, thanks for the tips.

I enjoyed it enough to beat it. Nothing amazing, but worth a few dollars at the sale price.

It is good I guess, but fights get extremely boring in the 2nd part of the game, because char is too op and oneshots everything around. Locations are also more corridor-like than in risen 1, there is many things to explore though. Some achievements doesnt work since game release and deep silver doesnt give a ♥♥♥♥, I even wrote a letter to support guys and they adviced me to contact the local retailer lol it is like local retailer can do something with broken steam achievements.

Right, well you need to understand what a Gothic game is. The Gothic games were a series of third person RPGs in the vein of Morrowind but with a MUCH smaller world, better characters and more hardcore combat/difficulty. Theyre very unique, theres not any real RPG like them, that i can think of.

Risen 1 is basically Gothic 4 (Made by the same dev team after they had a fight with the publisher and lost the Gothic name trademark). Risen 1 feels VERY Gothic. It doesnt explain a lot to you, it's very hardcore, the world is big but not huge ect. ect.

Risen 2 however does not feel like a Gothic game. it is a difficult RPG with pirate themes. It's still good. I enjoyed it immensely, but i felt like i was playing a game that the devs wanted to make seperately from the Gothic/Risen universe, then at the last minute thought "Screw it, call it Risen 2".

This doesnt make it any less of a good game, but if you go into it expecting a Gothic experiance...you'll be disappointed. It's a great hardcore RPG with pirate themes and if thats what you're looking for, You'll love it. I should also point out that the "Horrible combat" that people sometimes mention, has been patched quite a while ago. The combat is still insanely difficult and reliant on skill, but it's not unfair anymore

Right ok thanks for all the help. Seems like the game isn't as bad as everyone says it is. Will try both of them definitely

Risen 1 is widely considered a friggin' awesome game. Seriously, if you've not played Gothic before, Risen 1 is a GREAT introduction to their style of play. So definitely play that.

It's Risen 2 that has a bit of a mixed reaction from people. As i said, i still enjoyed Risen 2 immensly since i managed to remove "Gothic" from my mind and play it as its own game
