Looking at the reviews on the store page indicate bad reviews. It has a 69 Metacritic score indicating it's average. There are lots of reports of the game not being balanced and that the combat is naff. So, the OP has raised a genuine question - how bad is it? You think it's good which is fair enough.
It's on sale at the moment and I was thinking of buying it but I;ve read plenty to indicate it's not that good of a game.
Hmm, you may have convinced me to part with £3.
Piranha Bytes knows what they're doing. That carried over into Risen and Risen 2. You can see how their proprietary engine has developed over time through all 5 games (including Gothic 3).
I also like the Assassin's Creed series, but have not got to playing Black Flag yet.
Anyway, I've gone and bought it now. If it's rubbish I've only lost a few pounds.
1. Check your inventory for a ring. It should give you +5% experience/glory.
2. You'll start with an NPC who is looking for her father. Save this quest until the very end; use her to help you clear all the monsters on the island first. Doing it solo at the start of the game is nearly impossible.
After fixing those two things in my second attempt, I found myself playing until 3 in the morning. So give it a real chance and it can become a pretty enjoyable game. Cheers.
Ok, thanks for the tips.
Which achievements do you think are broken? I have a bunch.
Risen 1 is basically Gothic 4 (Made by the same dev team after they had a fight with the publisher and lost the Gothic name trademark). Risen 1 feels VERY Gothic. It doesnt explain a lot to you, it's very hardcore, the world is big but not huge ect. ect.
Risen 2 however does not feel like a Gothic game. it is a difficult RPG with pirate themes. It's still good. I enjoyed it immensely, but i felt like i was playing a game that the devs wanted to make seperately from the Gothic/Risen universe, then at the last minute thought "Screw it, call it Risen 2".
This doesnt make it any less of a good game, but if you go into it expecting a Gothic experiance...you'll be disappointed. It's a great hardcore RPG with pirate themes and if thats what you're looking for, You'll love it. I should also point out that the "Horrible combat" that people sometimes mention, has been patched quite a while ago. The combat is still insanely difficult and reliant on skill, but it's not unfair anymore
It's Risen 2 that has a bit of a mixed reaction from people. As i said, i still enjoyed Risen 2 immensly since i managed to remove "Gothic" from my mind and play it as its own game
