the funny thing is I didn't put a single point in blades just kept finding better swords and it still seemed like a somewhat viable solution, with a ton of toughness I didn't get damaged that much, and with points in blades and a bunch of skills I'm sure it's still viable. I could never block a single thing though (don't mean parry, that's a separate skill, just blocking).
as for sand and pistols and anything in your right hand, they're part of dirty tricks and distance or aiming doesn't matter, it's random if you hit or not.
And well from what i saw (the text atleast states it) The pistol skill is supposed to increase accuracy is that noticable or just minimal?
never put any points into pistols, but I doubt it's a considerable increase in accuracy. I was tempted to get left-handed (shorter cooldown) and pistols 1 at least, but since I got a musket I haven't used the secondary weapon.
combat even though it's hardly explained grows on you over time though
it starts out horrible ( like risen 1 ) but get's better once you understand things that work for you :)
-------------------------------------------------------------
what i found ( if it helps you out )
swords are swords... you point you click.... click enough and you win ^^
don't "craft" swords, nothing you craft can ever be better then what you can find or buy regardless ( + the recipe is far more expensive then outright buying or finding it )
( as for piercing swords you can find a dueling epe by stealing it from a chest 30-70 damage )
( you can find a rapier recipe in a undisclosed location - not to spoiler anything but it's there :) - 40-90 damage )
( only one "quest" weapon is better then the rapier if i recall )
( slash weapons follow the same rules )
damage output is based on the stock weapon value and some hidden calculatrions based on you stats ( but weapon values are obviously the more dominant factor )
( stats also influence your blokcing and usefullness etc )
other then that
parry - riposte - heavy attack is what you want
also get "kick" - you can buy it on the first island you sail to ( tacarigua ? or something )
it's going to push anyone backwards and you can follow up with a heavy hit flawlessly :)
--------------------------------------------------------------
pistols
----------
influenced by the pistol stat
it's a secondary weapon you can fire freely while in sword combat ( it's on a cooldown )
wether it hits or misses is based on stat ( basically higher stat = higher aim )
damage values as with swords based on the gun itself ( it's flat damage if it hits )
muskets / shotguns
--------------------------
these are a class appart and replace your sword in combat, they get free manual aim in return and do flat damages as stated on them
they are best used to get some initial hits in and then finish it off with swords and secondary pistol
all out musket / shotgun isn't all that usefull unless you run away inbetween shots :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
dirty tactics
the sand and such....... POINTLESS, it takes away your gun with flat damage values and pretty much a guarantee to hit
in return it does nothing usefull that you can't do with "kick" :)
just stick to pistols !!!!!!, seriously :p
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as for general combat, this works on everything, EVERYTHING
you block the comboflurry they have
once it's done you kick
once they stumble backwards you heavy hit them ( once )
back to blocking the flurry
kick
....
repeat
-- alternate ----
see the attack coming, roll backwards
have them run to you ( they can't attack while running, nothing can )
kick as they get near you
once they stumble backwards you heavy hit them ( once )
roll backwards
have them running
kick
.....
repeat
-- alternate --
one of the above
after a kick you fire a pistol
heavy attack
...
repeat and fire gun whenever the cooldown is there
-- alternate --
start of with a musket/gunshot ( or 2 if you have enough time )
one of the above
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i have no information of voodoo - went inquisition so i have no acces to it
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
pay attention to what is siad as well
warthogs for one ( as well as jaguar ) run away form you to charge attack
once they charge roll at the last moment - they will miss
go berserk untill they run again ( there ai is programmed to do so )
this is mentioned by someone somewhere
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
try to get only part of a group
2 warthog is far better then 5 ( 5 of anything will give you hell no matter what :p )
if you piss of to manny - RUN only the initial ones who sight you ( not the ones who get allerted by the initial ones ) will follow you in there designated attack
the rest will return to their spawn eventually
!!!!!!!! THERE IS A RUN FUNCTION WITH COOLDOWN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unlike risen 1
now this may seem redundant of me saying this
but nothing mentions it and it took me 15 hours to find out it existed ( I FELT VERY STUPID :) )
use it ^^
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A controller seems to be the better choice for combat as a whole
it limits free movement a bit but combat is far superior with it
-------------------------------------
they reused the same soft lock on as risen 1
it takes getting used to but it's doable
you fell inclined to block and attac while blocking ( because you can )
try to avoid this reflex though
blocking forces the lockon a bit harder on one person
when in a group, try to not hug the block feature and freeaim you slashing around
the lockon switches to whoever you look at and is nearest to you giving you full 360 reach with your swords
( only if you don't force block though )
took me a while to get that figured out as well :)
finishing off with swords would be awesome if the game let you switch between main weapons outside the inventory. as it is, I just buy more bullets and don't bother switching to a sword anymore. also, if you level muskets, most things go down in 2-4 shots, and if you have a double-barreled weapon (available on antigua, for example), it only means 1 reload most of the time.
same for sprinting (knew about it because I go through the manual and keybindings when I start a game): it'd be awesome if it lasted more than 2 seconds.
quickwheel ( or slots if m+k )
( not sure if it works the same on m+k )
but the quickwheel on controllers allow me to freely switch between musket and sword midcombat at will
it's pretty much a macro for circumventing the invenotry screen :)
sadly controller doesn't have a keybinding menu, hence me hopping like in risen1 ofr 15 hours straight ( and i though it was doing the smart thing ^^ )
Guess i just hate the Dodge roll and all the multybindings (Like having jump be on space then you have your dodge on space and one of the movement keys and kick is on space too and dodging is also there with double tap on a movement key)
Yhea know the softlock and it can be annoing but i got used to it just cant deal with the game Using the softlock normaly and once you block you are Just Hardlocked on the enemy (unless you dodge at what point it reverts back to softlock until the dodging is over)
likely i should Block less (normaly i constantly move having my block up no matter if the enemy can be blocked or not) but i just hate the dodging with double tap
Regarding dirty tricks I am kinda interested in stuff like The fire breathing but well guess i will pass it (The blinding sounded nice too but in the end is just seemed like a buff to the enemy)
Then you mentioned the part about Dodging to the side at the last moment for cougars and warthogs
How do you hit the cougars after you roll away? For me they usualy are either already out of range agein at the moment my char gets back up from the roll or they just start spam attacking me and i have to roll away agein but right backwards (at that point they like to just back off and well agein out of range)
and The Warthogs are not as fast so it works to attack them but oftentimes they just charge me from point blank rang afterwards or use a normal attack (so they stagger me with that)
For normal Combat i guess i just got to learn some more skills like the heavy attack However how are you dealing with savages (atleast the ranged ones)
while their spears are Easy to dodge i find it pretty much impossible to kill them since their attacks also move them a bit and (maybe because i spent so much time blocking) they are actualy faster while they attack then me not attacking
o and at what point do Pistols actualy get usefull
i managed to climb a rock once and used pistol to shoot some warthogs running around it
well it took me around 2 or 3 minutes per warthog and in normal combat i dont have that much time
it really helps to bring a companion along. risen was like 95% solo, this is 90% companion. they sometimes have extra lines during dialogs too and really help out with combat, and since they're part of your team, don't steal xp either, which is a major annoyance in the first game and this one too. it might make the game too easy, but you don't have to stay back if you don't want to, and you definitely have to help them out sometimes, though I never give them grog, if they get knocked down (happened a couple times) they'll get up when the batlte's over, and by then they usually did their part. not that I use grog myself, best keep it for later and never drink any...
roll sideways as they attack towards you
they will miss and you'll end up angled on their backside
enough to get a heavy hit in
and repeat again
for everything else - kick always works ( you can even kick them in a wall while huggin them so you stay within range over and over again :) )
--------------------
might take some time to get the hang of it, but once you do the ai is the same for all of them
huggin distance so they don't spear you
then roll to angle thme and hit
roll to angle them and hit
roll .... etc
luckily combat is basic enough to find abusive ways into it
it all works out well once you figure it out
it's just that figuring it out is so damn hard sometimes :p
------------------
or go musket / shogun and just shoot -- run away a bit -- shoot --- run away a bit --- ......
it's somewhat cheap but muskets / shotguns are op if you can be patient with it :)
( musket / shotgun only goes if you refuse voodoo and only once you reach the sworded coast ( for me 15ish hours of exploration heavy gameplay to get there )
there is a giant spider on tacarigua in a cave
musketted it down by just shoting and running.... it never got within meleerange to hit me... never stood a chance
and bullets are inifinte buys at 1g each............ that's a jokeprice :p
------------------------
after sworded coast you can go everywhere at will
so you can skip some things left and right to deal with later when you are more equiped
and well guess i was to keen on staying on the edge of my range so my rolls were getting me out of range
and yhea the spider funnely eneught was a smaller problem then sand devils or the sunken once (dont know what was up with that guy he just went into a infinite loop of attacks for me the first time i fought him afterwards i just pulled him to the gate)
For Pistols there are for example the twins that are apparently double barreled (so i would guess i can shot 2 times with it before having to reload)
and then there is the grinder
They have the same Dmg and Range However the Twin seems to have 2 shots instead of one and has only 15 seconds reload instead of 30 while also giving a better bonus to Pistols
But it is still cheaper then the Grinder so can i take the Text from the Grinder Litteraly that it is Deadly on short range and good for inexpererienced Marksmann? (i would guess it has a better base chance to hit)
Because no Matter how much they scewed up in some points i dont believe that they would make this big balance fails to make the stronger equipment cheaper (atleast the 100% Clearly better one)
for pistols i should look it up but there isn't all that much information out there ( somehow the risen series remained underrated for the big audience ( ??? nani :3 ) )
the twins in themselves only fire once and then go on cooldown as all pistols but there cooldown is halfed as you stated - in the end one coould say "you fire twice in the same time as let's say the 30 sec cooldown ones, but that's more or less a way of looking at it
in the practical part they just fire like normal pistols with the damage they are given like any other pistol would
--------------------
the grinder "may" have better "aim"
aside form you statlevelling affecting aim any weapon would have it's base value but that information is hidden stats for the player
there is no way aside form rigorous testing to know what is what as it is never stated openly
i'd say assume that it does indeed have higher aim on shorter range
( muskets and shotguns function the same way, they have a certain range of effectiveness ( displayed by a glowing circle when within range -- this circle get's brighter the closer you go.... which makes me assume it helps out a bit )
other then that
i'm not sure right now but pistols have 2 ammotypes
bullets being what they are.. simple straightforward shooting bullets that hit or miss
and lead thingy ( forgot the name :p )
the lead thingy is more like buckshot and has a spreadradius
it's less effective on longer range but better on closer range because of it
( those pistols are pretty much baby shotguns with spread )
not sure what the grinder is but i think it's one of those lead based ones ???
if so, then it would indeed be superior in hugging distance then regular pistols :)
-----------------------------
according to the internet
twins are preffered for lesser cooldown
in the end after damage calcualtion the grinder can at best only do it's 80 damage ( it can never surpass it's flat value ) on unarmored foes
so the twins doing a bit less damage can technically fire twice in the same time as the grinder -- giving them more "final" damage if you would use the same timeframe as comparison
pistols are also only best used in close combat regardless
( musket's and shotgun's are there for the long range fights )
( or voodoo can outright avoid fights by controlling the enemie and putting multiple enemies against each other creating infighting.... it's a whole system on it's own :p ))
so in the end the grinder can never really live up to it's "expectations" because of it's extended cooldown
----------------
i think the best way to treat this is as a "gimmick"
you are a pirate, pirates have pistols... might as well make them shoot and be usefull
they probably put some work into them but nothing to major
the main combat is swords in this game so they went for that ( hence why pistols are on cooldown and are treated as backup once in a while shots )
it's more or less, pick one that looks nice to you
and then hit it's corresopnding key once in a while :p
there is nothing ot indepth about them
it's more or less you deciding if you want to have a coodlwon tradeoff for damage or a damage tradeoff for cooldown
do you shoot a lot - get twins untill some better comes along :)
do you not shoot a lot - get the highest flat damage value since cooldown is going to be redundant anyway :)
P.S.
people tend to preffer the twins since they are a free pickup during the first 15 minutes of the game on sebastiano's ship :)
at that point they straight up surpass the officer pistol, so they don't really care about other pistols anymore :)
Now i just have to manage this feaking earth temple fight
and yhea While i found some things on Risen 1 and 3 the 2 part Seemed to be kinda hatet bye most (i mean i can understand why it is quite different from the other ones in a few ways)
earth temple is a gimmick fight btw
get the gimmick it likes you to do and it's as easy as it can be ^^
have fun :)
