In : 09 Death of the empress, I shot her twice with incendary bolts (In Dunwall tower before she activate the painting). She disapeared and now I can`t find her anywhere. No clue is given on what to do. Is this abug in the game or what to do ??

She enters the painting I believe. Your objective was to sneak and return her soul to her. I have never attacked her before so not sure what happens.

I had to start that level again. Same happened to me. At first I shot her with incediary bolts, she changed into a kind of fire whirlwind, I had the rune although I was not planning a stealth game, put it in the throne, nothing happened. I spent a good 40 minutes in that room wondering what had happened. In the mission log everything was ticked, except one (re-unite the sole - or something similar. (The whole time until I left 40mins later she was by the painting in a fire like state, but often the spotted/enemy alerted symbol appeared if I tried to attack her then-it did nothing, tried the heart on her firey form numerous times but it was well and truely impossible to change her (bugged?) state.) After leaving and coming back, like the OP she was know where to be found.)

Anyhow nothing I could do, so went back into the castle, had already killed just about all the witches so movement was easy, I went everywhere, talked to her statues (I hadn't done that, but tried as I had nothing to lose. That took over an hour or two to make sure I had done everything. I had.

Went back into the throne room, and she was gone. Couldn't go into the painting, couldn't do anything at all. By the way in the log even the too none lethal boxes were ticked, but she was gone, and the sole not reunited. I really did try everything.

Checked on the net and found your post OP - thanks, and a few others mentioning similar very end game bugs. I am sure it is a bug and don't want it to happen again.

I gather it is necessary to creep up on her and reunite the heart to proceed.
What if she sees me, I run up to her, not attacking but with heart in hand, is that OK??

The only thing I am sure of is that she mustn't be heavily attacked (to the point of her temporary death which stays like that.) before reuniting the heart.
This is critical if violent or stealth for the game to go forward.

Don't do what I do. It's a bug.

One question. I am not doing stealth but have the rune (black one) so I don't think I need to do anything with it for violent high chaos ending, but I could easily put it in the throne. Is that correct? Is it needed? From the mission objectives it seems not to be unless non violent ending.)

My main question is this: Upon sneaking in where she is painting, if stealth fails as I try to creep up to her, and don't fight her can it be done (reunite) the heart, or must it be done by stealth?

That's what I really want to know. I understand don't attack her strongly at first. Then, must I reunite the heart only by stealth, or if she spots me is it still OK??

Any in put or advice would be greatly appreciatted.
Luckily I am enjoying re-playing the level, but haven't entered the main castle/thrown room area yet. I am afraid to get caught by this bug again so just that question about re-uniting the heart with her, and if it's only by stealth, or she sees but not attacked, are both ways OK or must it be stealth?

I did attack her heavily BEFORE to the point of (temporary) death loop. This I am sure was the problem??
After that nothing works, I have tried everything possible. Game just gets stuck, leave that room come back (with heart of course) and she is gone, as happened to the OP.

Sorry for multiple posts. Just that you shot her with two incendiary bolts, exactly what I did.

Exactly the same happend here. I think it's a bug in the game. The only way to finish the game is the low chaos - sneak-up to method. Any other way does not work, I think. If anyone has another idea, let us now.

Thanks for sharing. But, dam! I want max chaos!! I'll try once more with a save just before that throne room bit so I can repeat.

Will post if it works! Plus any problems/how to avoid.

I have a feeling that you might be right though. Most annoying.

Actually I'll post regardless, within a week or sooner.

Edit: +1 to any other idea, or folks who completed without stealth/violence. Plenty of posts and guides online to complete that bit if going for low chaos/no deaths, but not a single thing, positive or negative about the chaos way.

No body mentioning that in guides (of which there are plenty) either means everyone who plays, plays stealth, low chaos, or that no body has done that way, so tried again in stealth.
I don't know. I have hope, but yeah, it does seem to be a bug.

Update: Possible Spoiler for those not yet finished first run. (Minor spoiler if at all)

Success-HIGH CHAOS- Had to sneak up on her, then equip and use heart. That's it.
After that - Well, I won't say except go into the painting after her.

I made the corrupt rune, but didn't use it. I killed her and took the throne for
myself. Probably the worst possible ending. Ha Ha.

Made multiple saves before. But it worked first time.

It's only speculation, but seems it's necessary to sneak up on her with heart in hand,
when right behind her use the heart, once was fine. Then cut scene-then deal with the
ending. After the "use the heart," there are no more weird bugs. Anyhow that's how
I did it.

Edit: It worked first time, so if she spotted me I don't know what would happen, but I
guess that triggers the bug??

I don't usually sneak, I snipe slice and dice, and kill everyone, everything I can.
But she is totally focused on her painting, so the sneak worked first time.

Just save before that whole bit. After the problem of the heart is done, it
auto saves several times, I didn't manual save after re-uniting the heart.

It's just that one part, then it's plain sailing - in terms of no more issues.
Is the game play plain sailing? Well that would spoil it for some so I won't
comment.
