For the story yes, plus the first games dlc.

Technically, no. You really don't need to know all the stuff that happened earlier, although understanding the lore and history (and how it affects your character personally) will be much easier if you previously played the first game and its two DLCs.

If you only played Dishonored 1 but none of its DLC, there will still be a ton of stuff in Dishonored 2 that will seem to come out of nowhere.

The story a Pug says, yes - it's essential to actually understand what is going on, who the characters are, and why it's important when you interact with them in certain ways. if you don't care about the story, then no it's not as important.

For story yes!
Bacause in 2nd game exist a lot of explanations and moments concerning to Dishonored 1 + both DLCs.

I found myself thinking a lot, if I hadn't played as much as I had before 2 came out, including the dlc and all, the impact of the characters, their behaviors and their dialog, and particularly the ending sequence bits with them... those things would make extremely little sense.

The story for Dishonored 2, follows on from “The Knife of Dunwall” and “The Brigmore Witches” DLC for Dishonored 1.

Technically no, but storywise it would be like watching Return of the Jedi without first watching New Hope or Empire.

[Note: for my generation (old), there are no other Star Wars movies except those three.]

*high fives* for someone who may have seen the original when it wasn't "episode 4" :)

You should play part 1 period, because it is an awesome game.

It was always Episode IV..... the Screen Crawl at the beginning of the movie wasn't changed...

LOL

no. No it was never episode 4 until about 6 months after the original release.

I was 10 when the movie came out, and saw it three times the first couple months of that release. I actually saw the "oh no it doesn't really exist honest even though thousands of people from completely disparate places can recite the exact same differences in the unedited version" version, the first time I saw it. When i saw it the second time about a month later, there were notably confusing omissions - all of which had been cut early on.

the screen crawl, I absolutely assure you, WAS changed. James Earl Jones wasn't on the original either, but was credited later when they altered it.
