It's been quite a while since I have updated this review and after Warballoon asking me to look into it again at christmas, I did.

One thing is for sure: They improved the games a LOT. I remember it being a pile of massive bugs and while the game is not "perfect" in its current state, I really have to say that the Devs did an amazing job.

The game runs a lot smoother, the interface has been polished, the station is more than a decoration and a safe haven and the Crew actually is doing jobs... more or less.

Ship-Combat finally feels like it's going somewhere and the missions as far as I've seen them are diverse. Of course this is just the foundation and I hope in time there will be different ways to win a battle.

CQC still is a mess though. Apparently weapons have ammo (Vanishing pistol of two crew member), and your Crew is unable to even hit a barn door with it. With no cover-system, weak weapons and quite an overpowered healing ability, battles are not challenging.

Overall: The game is progressing in a way that is recommendable, that is if you are interested at looking at ALPHA-Gameplay and helping Warballoon out. If you are interested in enjoying the game for a longer period of time, do not buy it yet! For this it's way too unfinished at the moment.

Since we don't have a middle way for recommending games, I'll try to go with the perception of the common gamer and stay at "No".

I really gotta say, the game came a long, long way.

I've seen several design updates and a lot of polishing.
Gotta say that the HUD is working nearly perfectly and I figured out most of the stuff by myself.

The station has some nifty shops that you can use to replenish supplies or buy new stuff, though I gotta say that a lot of stuff is imbalanced yet, including prices for stuff.

What I really, really dig is the perk-system, though it needs some polishing too.
Only perks that are available for the class of the crewman/woman should be visible.

Sadly as before the game really lacks when it comes to combat:

The fact that you have to destroy "hull tiles" makes is really difficult sometimes to destroy a ship, especially if an indestructible generator or other object blocks the path.

Combat on ships feels really lacking: Either you have good equipment and a large or advanced Crew or you'll get killed.
A further huge minus is the inability to disable a ship by taking their crew out, making it impossible to tackle a fight differently.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more updates, especially gameplay wise.

Abandoned, just like the mobile game. They will never deliver on their content promises, but they will leave the game up in order to suck money out of your pockets.

I kickstarted Star Command: Galaxies so long ago that I don't even remember what my expectations were, but they weren't... This. The interface is so damn annoying that it is a chore to play. You constantly have to hunt around for the right place for your enormous mouse cursor to be to click on the object you want to click on. Teleporting your guys around is fiddly and micromanagey. There are no UI scaling options. The music is 95% too loud. And now the new TTS voice proudly declares "RUSTY PISS" when I pick up the Colt .45 pistol.

I've accumulated 12 hours of playtime over the nearly 10 years since backing it, just waiting to be able to get through the tutorial and have stuff to do, and you know what, maybe I could've made it this time in Release Candidate 4, but by the 3rd jump point I was so tired of interacting with it. This game is just inexplicably, unquantifiably laborious, and typing this review out has helped me to realize how much I've grown to hate it.

Wait until the game is released before you purchase. As it currently stands, the game is not playable. A large amount of bugs which unfortunately breaks the game. Thank you for letting us try the game while in Alpha but if I could go back, I would have waited for the finish product.

EDIT: The full release proves much better than the game I played in 2021 but has a long way to go in terms of its numerous bugs. It's clear however that the developers are working hard to improve this so I'd keep an eye out and If you're on the fence with this, maybe give Star Command Galaxies a go. Just save your game as often as possible to have back ups for if the bugs take over.

I loved Star Command on mobile but I can't, in good conscience recommend Galaxies in its current state. As of 2021, over five years later, the game remains bug ridden and almost unplayable. I've had my ship fused into another ship, destroying my crew and breaking the game, I've had my ship stranded, unable to progress due to the UI breaking and I've, many times, had my crew die for no reason. This sucks even more knowing what a great concept this game explores. When Star Command Galaxies works, its incredible! The level of customisation of both the crew and the ship is brilliant and the witty dialogue gives your unique band of recruits great personality as you voyage with them through space. Rest in peace Brigadier Zargeal and the crew of the Flying ♥♥♥♥ Mk III (finally having given up after Mk I and II had untimely bug ridden deaths). But though I can't recommend Galaxies just yet, put it on your wish list or follow it or something because after over half a decade in early access, Warballoon is still active on Twitter promising bug fixes, so hey, there's hope.

Abandonware that's had a 1.0 sticker slapped on it a decade after being abandoned, and this isn't the first half baked release from these people.

It's a great concept, but it's unplayable, and never will be.

Edit: The devs going through every negative review with a "that's just your opinion" brush off says a lot about their integrity. No, it's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of promises they themselves made and broke, which are still publicly available online including the kickstarter for this abandonware. A quick google and looking through their own posts will show how much they've lied. You make promises you don't keep, take accountability for that instead of blaming the people that call it out. The lack of integrity and accountability says everything anyone could ever need to know about these folks.

It keeps crashing.

I still vividly remember tracking the release of the original Star Command on IOS when I was a kid, and fondly recall finishing my first of a handful of playthroughs sitting through AP Bio as a high school freshman. The experience was more linear than I had hoped for, but the style was charming and the gameplay was novel for the time and platform. I was always a fan of FTL, and this scratched a similar itch while also being distinct enough to warrant its own existence. I was excited when Galaxies was first announced all those years ago, but it was in the oven for so long it simply slipped off the radar. I am now 4 years post *college* graduation, but seeing this product finally enter 'full release' means more to me than I thought it would. Its not perfect, but the passion for the project shines through and I can only hope Warballoon will continue to tweak and polish.

I only just finished the introductory order, and my thoughts are positive overall. I do agree with the criticisms regarding UI scaling and font readability, and I personally experienced some weird overlap issues with my ship and other ships that resulted in me being unable to properly navigate either and thus needed to restart that mission. It can also be finicky when you are trying to issue movement orders or select something on the ground and the game does the opposite. Pathing can be weird too. It is my understanding that this game is more procedural in nature, so stuff like that is bound to happen I suppose. Being able to save mid-mission, rather than only between excursions at a station would help these soft-lock issues.

Even if you disregard my personal sentimentality towards this project I believe the experience is more than worth the cost of entry, and I hope the game gets enough attention to justify continued development. I suspect some features fell by the wayside over the years, such as planetary deployments, but maybe things can get moving again if they get some momentum. Regardless, I am very happy to see this thing finally get out of the door and am looking forward to playing around with it some more when I can.

Alright, so this is my first review.. im gonna keep it simple. Alot of potential, but after all the development theyve hade or made. Its unplayable for me ... 2 hours ingame and i've given up. To many bugs, to much stuff that doesn't work yet. Im used to early release games. My advice to devs: Fix te stuff that is in it right now, leveling up characters, zombies actually dying instead of infinite health.. etc.. I gave up at the groll ship. I will change this review when its improved. Good luck, you have my support!
