(I have no clue either. I just figured it was some sort of English abbreviation I dont know of)

I personally assumed it was an abbreviation of "refrain." According to Merriam-Webster, refrain can mean
a regularly recurring phrase or verse especially at the end of each stanza or division of a poem or song
Which would kind of fit the fact that it's the theme for both of the base game's final bosses.

If you really want to know for sure, you could probably ask GemaYue or Triodust on Twitter.
