If both of them are in the same squad and close enough (20 meters I think?) to each other, they'll auto-share the ammo as needed - so only if the MG guy runs out of ammo
I always reposition them to be together whenever that squad type is born into the game, plus, after the assistant feeds the gunner all his ammo the assistant will not get re-supplied with mg ammo when he visits a supply truck or crate.
It's, probably, a whole lot easier to strip off all the ammo from the assistant and give it to the mg then load up the assistant with rifle ammo grenades and bandages, then send him on his way to do his own thing.
I tend to have others in the squad carry a box or two of ammo for the MG as well, using the above method to gain ammo.
Often I'll give the assistant a semi-auto rifle or submachine gun so they can be easily identified.
Why bother micromanaging semis and subs? If you can be bothered, just give them all MGs. Esp the mg assistant who spawns with the correct ammo. Take the MGs from any MG operator or vehicles/lafettes. Just remember to re-equip the vehicle/lafette mgs when u get into the next game.
But honestly... don't really need to do this micro work. Your vehicles and guns will do all the killing anyway. Infantry just need to be 375hp bodies to spread out in front.
