Personally I'd rather see a force pool like in the old Close Combat games with the added twist of unlocking more modern units as the war goes on.

It divide research tree by years and make some really nice addition,would suggest to read description,but it make it a little bit harder with unit numbers.

Doesn't split them by years but more into branches.
Anti-Tank, Heavy-Tank, Luftwaffe, Logistics etc. So you can advance in these sections you think you will lack. Also the period of time is dedicated to Latewar (43+) Gives me a lot of Company of Heroes vibes :D
But to be fair Max Drechsler's A&Rm mod (posted above) is also a great choice, you should try both imo :D
