Basically hardcore = enemy troops as close to your troops in HP and skills as you can get.
I believe skills are the same but HP is s little bit lower. I'd recommend playing this if you ever intend to play PvP because the AI soldiers are as close to the PvP ones as you get.
The economy setting is the hard one to give advice on.
If you set your economy to low you and you lose a slots of soldiers or units you won't be able to replace your losses let alone purchase better units. On low you need to be extra careful and try to keep every single soldier alive if you can.
On hardcore with low economy you want a very large map so you get a choice of what location you attack and therefore what resources you are going to get as a reward. In almost all case a research map is your first choice but later in the campaign when you have the essential stuff researched you might choose something else.
Economy: very high
The reason being more challenging and the AI won't send 500 dumb troops at you so you can play slaughterhouse simulator.
large map
lowest eco
and the one lower than max difficult
but play wise you need to be carefull and slow push on attack..on defense it depends on the map sometiems its better to defend only one spot
I now play on normal and low resources. With 4 campaigns going, I am getting out-teched by the AI, or so it seems at times. I will need to play these more to really see.
One thing I really hate is the vanilla distance of sight. So I have been playing with the rangemod and I really like it. FOW on. It really opens things up and makes LOS super important. You cant just move your guys around like vanilla. It also amps up the importance of scouting.
Every so often, you are put in sight range of one of the objectives which can be fun as everyone starts shooting as soon as they hit the map.
Here is a list of the mods that make the game the best for me.
Longrange
Auto medic
Everything stays
Increased call in stages
Tank Rider Open Fire!
Effective body armor
Preparation time plus
Can you link the mods? I can't find some of them.
It's a shame that AI is directly linked to player's own advancement, usually leading to rushed research (key weapons to oppose AI's tanks etc) and making majority of the early tech tree options totally obsolete by the time you field them.
I know what files to edit to make AI progress more slowly, so one could enjoy each "tier"" longer without fearing that you need to replace it next battle, but it's very tedious. I hope developers would add an extra option for AI research speed to compensate - for example, 2,3,4 times longer before advancing a tier and so on.
