Things to focus on the tech tree:
Rush tanks, finish offensives under 7 minutes by just rolling in there because dev's can't figure this out :D
I myself would always unlock the second deployment wave first, then get a light tank to help with pushing along with some basic infantry. It's a good way to kick things off, although you still need to take it slow when pushing the enemy. You really can't just give an "attack move" order towards a point and expect to win.
invest into tanks quite quickly, I usually go at a pace that makes it harder for myself though, don't like having Panthers whilst the AI is struggling with M1941s. infantry, I just use any, but I know better infantry does help a lot in defending yourself.
In early game try to get some decent infantry with a light tank, focus mainly MG's with a small cannon when starting. Ultimately you should transition towards heavier, more assault oriented tanks. This is because in offense, tanks are vital, and assault tanks like the SMK for example benefit from having good allround armour with multiple guns and turrets. If you try to capture a point with a medium tank that has weak sides, AT rifles will give you a REALLY bad time. Backing tanks up with infantry is a must, but don't overestimate infantry, tanks do most of the work.
Late game you'll want to transition to long range artillery. I love rockets in this game, but cannons have better range (Nebelwerfer 250 and a cannon 400 for example). Being able to shell enemy positions straight away in conquest offensive is a huge advantage, as enemies spawn a bit later allowing you time to rush fairly undefended (some mg's and AT rifles) points. Rushing can make the difference between a game that lasts 5-15 minutes to one that takes 45-60 minutes. Ultimately late game devolves into tank spam though, so you will need heavy AT guns at strategic locations. Tanks often travel on roads when possible, so placing one facing the road and putting up some AT mines can be a game changer.
At least, that's how I play. Start off small with light vehicles and infantry, try to target factory/ammo spaces to get large boosts in munitions (moreso if they 2-3 star spaces that give a little extra, provided you are willing to take the risk), and soon you'll have more than enough ammo to play around with and expand on heavy weapons without fear of running out.
To add, I like more main campaign, I REALLY like to take it slow and spare most of my soldiers from certain death, when I rush it.
Especially around at the beginning, your forces are weak, focus on defending only one VP and retreat if needed. Use AT mines on roads/crossroads to slowdown tanks, disable tracks and ambush them with possibility to capture better equipment.
Attack battles are easier, if you will be able to keep 2:1 victory ratio, you will advance in the conquest anyway.
I'm now playing conquest as Finland, hard difficulty...11 victories,3 defeats so far, but already captured some heavies and situation is much better
