How do you guys even do this? In conquest, most of the time a KV will sit just outside my vision range and do way more damage than I'm comfortable with. Much easier to just dump arty on it from up to 500m away.
'Can't' you mean? Their penetration accuracy and reload is awful. Stug III is a good cheap counter to them. Ausf. G is very good and can be useful late game.
For a main battle tank you should work toward the Pz IV Ausf. G. You can run those until you start seeing IS tanks and T-34-85's. Then you're gonna need Tigers or Panthers.
I recommend either going Stug line OR Pz IV line. Not both. Obviously the Pz IV line is more expensive but has much greater potential.
Yes and no. Range is a huge issue. You'll find the enemy battery is well out of range. Or worse, they'll hit your mortar before you even had a chance to counter battery. I can't recommend the SK 18 enough. It out ranges everything including the 21cm Morser by about 100m. It's accurate, fires fast and holds a lot of ammo. I've even sniped moving vehicles with it from 350m.
*edit* Keep your mortar handy though. The high trajectory is really useful for hitting targets behind steep obstacles.
What you need are the tanks equipped with 75mm barrels or Pak guns with the 7.5cm barrels. The 7.5cm Pak 40s have, if I remember correctly, 143mm penetration at the closest range, going down to 115mm penetration at 150 range. That's sufficient to penetrate anything the Soviets have (t-34, KVs) at any range since the max armor on any Soviet tank is 110mm. Similarly, both variants of the flak 88 are sufficient to penetrate anything the Soviets have.
In terms of tanks, look for German tanks equipped with a 7.5cm gun. This includes Panzer IV, Stugs IIIs, etc. They all have 135mm penetration at the closest range and can penetrate all Soviet tanks at all ranges.
