My unit's AI is extremely dumb
What is going on? Why do my soldiers stand and look into void, while an enemy is 1m away from them and is killing them, but the moment I tell them to shoot, they instantly kill them? Why can't they do ANYTHING by themselves?

Pathfinding in this game is disgusting! Tanks can decide to ignore the bridge and go have a swim in a lake, infantry can decide to go around the forest for an additional 500m instead of running 10m through it. Tanks IGNORE commands to attack unit, if the so called unit is not in their view (they would go to the unit and attack it themselves in CTA and MoW2, instead of standing and doing nothing). Vehicles bump into each other if they are using road, unable to figure out how to go around or, for example, not accelerate into another tank/truck.
Trucks often bug out, going from 20km/h to crazy 50-60 km/h in the mud and back to 12km/h on a road, while sometimes bugging out and switching places with the gun they are towing.

Compared to CTA and MoW2, the units are super dumb and unable to do anything without you directly controlling them.
I feel more like playing third-person shooter, rather than playing a strategy game.

And speaking of directly controlling units, if you go to CTA GOH Ostfront market page, you will see screenshots of them using first person for direct control, while it was cut from the game, that is kinda scummy.

Ever the problem with games. I think to get a better AI its a combination of programing and increased system resources.

The problem is - their original Call to Arms games works much better than this DLC, and same goes to MoW2, which was released years ago.

First-person IS in the game, though it's not like an FPS. You have to switch the direct control mode (mine is on the T key-- don't remember if it's the default), which puts you in 3rd person mode, then if you zoom all the way in, the last level of zoom will be looking down the sights.

they should just take the AI from Rise of Nations and tweak it. still the best damn AI to this day.

10/10 agree. Getting actually sick and tired of losing hours of progress because my units don't cover their arcs. Oh there's a single dude firing a pistol at my guys across the map? Better turn MY ENTIRE TURRET 180 DEGREES AND HAVE A LOOK! This seriously needs to be looked at. The AI never seems to suffer this problem, their arc-covering is levels of flawless we meat-brained humans could never hope to achieve.

the ai is improved with higher tier infantry. but the tank path finding is weimar. I find that the tanks travel on the outside edge of roads, so they drive slower. Or the route they take will lead to your tank getting side shot so sometimes you have to carefully navigate it down a side road. It just is what it is. I would like to see advanced sophisticated AI in a game like this but have never found it. Graviteam tactics is supposed to be the most realistic ww2 sim out there, but the graphics are ♥♥♥♥.

Well the AI only react if they see something and not when someone shoot at them. I watched a single dude in a bush kill an entire squad because the whole squad don't see him and they were looking at something far far over the hill. I watched my Stug show its butt toward an anti-tank gun after said gun shot it.. The AI is so dumb that it's hilarious. :lunar2019piginablanket:

Mm, the TDs are especially bad. I've taken to turning the engines off to stop them doing this, but they can still try to aim the gun so far to the side that they still don't see anything in front of them. It's infuriating and immensely frustrating. This outright abysmal player-unit AI behaviour has caused many a restart, which, given that loading times are also abysmal, only adds to the frustration.

Not true, you see the dude, you can tell AI to attack him and they will also "see him" instantly after that, the AI is just to dumb to do it themselves. I also play with FOG turned off, so AI does see them always. And I was not even talking about bush-like situation. The guy could be standing right in the plain site and still not be attacked.

Happens to my friend and I constantly but no one wants to hear me out when I try explaining it.

FYI Afaik turning off fog of war does not change how the AI spots units for engagement. Their vision cones still play a role. Somebody else has to confirm but I seem to remember it beeing mentioned earlier on the forums.

They might be doing it since they want to use machine guns (you have stationary machine gun, only shooting in the forward direction, and other one on the turret)

But yeah, thats quite dumb from AI, even in MOW2 AI knew that they should focus more on one group than a random grenadier in bushes.

yeah i really want the devs to focus on this. like why tf do my units not throw AT grenades when a tank is right next to them.

Probably because players would whine if they were trying to save the tank to capture, and their units just tossed AT grenades with out them being commanded to.

Maybe you have disabled the turret, and are just waiting for the crew to jump out. So they can fix it and steal it. Then a random unit just blows it up. The AI does throw regular grenades on it's own. So the logic is there.

Love how they added loads of AT guns on conquest now so your tanks can now sit and die without defending them selves, you have to micromanage ever little bit and on top of that a aiming circle like WOT with rng so your shots miss and the ai hit always, just not fun or fair.
