The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut

Is Damage Reduction working properly?
I won't go exactly into the (lack of) balance issues since there are some topics on that already.

But I've noticed that even though I DO have items that give me some Damage Reduction (Physical/Elemental/Etc.) and have Katarina Auras that also give me some DR, on my Status Screen, it shows I have 0/0% of DR.

So, what gives? Is that a small bug on the stats screen that is showing wrong info or aren't the DR bonuses being properly given?

im not quite sure but i believe the DR you are talking about is another stat, there are some essences that have 7 damage reduction or deflection something like that cant remember the name properly, because if you hover over the mouse where the defense stat is and all the resistances on the character status page you can see how much % of damage you can "absorb" from diferent types of atacks.

In the Details screen is shown only the GENERAL (all-types) flat / percentage damage reduction.

The damage reduction from concrete damage types is not shown.

The 10% damage reduction from Katarina staying in Ghost-form should be shown, but the percentage of damage she takes, instead of you, is not shown in the numbers, but instead is shown in the tool-tip when you mouse-over the damage reduction statistic.

As you can see this is a far better explanation of whatever i threw up with my keyboard XD

I don't pretend to understand the mechanics (especially this in Final Cut, which is changed from the previous trilogy games) in great depth, I just share my observations.

Hhhmmm..... thanks!
I think I got it! :steamhappy:

But in which situation would that "flat damage reduction" be shown on my status screen? How would I increase that?
Seru Nov 10, 2015 @ 10:41am
you have to balance it out increasing the 3 biggest defense factors with is "defense", "resistances" and "dodge" i did some trials and realize that sometimes is better to lose an item that has 100 defense for soemthing that has +50 to all resistances or if you want to talk about physical damage +50 physycal resistance there is a soft cap to each of those 3 stats so its not necesarily better to have all items with high defense value if your resistance's values are near the floor give it a try and you will see what im talking about dont go with the "+protectcion" value the item displays before you equip it, and you will realize that you might have a better benefit increasing the "resistances" instead of your "defense" value.

@ Yami - your message makes me wonder what is DEFENSE for. I mean, Physical, Elemental and Poison Resist are pretty self explanatory. And then there's Defense....
It would've been easier if the devs used Physical Defense and Magical Defense (like most RPGs)...

I know what you mean and ill try to explain as best as i can if you check your character status you will realize that under the 3 main atributtes you will see a little slot that shows the "defense" stat value and at the very bottom you will see the 3 general resistances "physical", "poison" and "elemental" and finally on the details section you can find the "dodge" stat, "defense" afects all 3 resistances and then the final "damage mitigation" (lets call this "Final defense") will also use the resistance value of each of the 3 particular damage types to further mitigate the damage (3 general resistances), now here is where you have to pay attention to the values on items because items can have 4 types of resistance values "+ physical resistance", "+ poison resistance", "+ elemental resistance" and finally "+ all resistances" the one you always want is "+ all resistances" be caurefull to not confuse this one with the "+ elemental resistances" because the "+ all resistances" will increase the value of the 3 general resistances (physical, poison and elemental); "dodge" is very diferent because dodge will be an independent factor that will trigger first so if you dodge an atack defense doesnt trigger if you dont dodge an atack then defense will trigger.

The soft cap i mentioned before as i have seen so far is around 40ish % on "defense" value so to increase your "final defense" its not good to only stack the "defense" stat you need to stack "defense" and the "3 general resitances" the value for "final defense" will appear when you mouse-over the tool tip for the particular resistance that you want to check "physical", "poison" and "elemental".

Im sorry if this confuses you even more i tried to be as specific as posible and im not trying to be rude being overly specific just hoping to help.

Ok, I'm starting to understand. Later I'll mess around with some items and pay careful attention to see what adds/subtracts from the character sheet. Thanks a lot for taking your time to explain it to me :)

(is there a game manual somewhere? Usually when a game has a manual it's on the Store Page, but I haven't seen anything there)

BTW, the link you left isn't working :steamsad:

You're not over-specific. It's exactly as you've explained it.

Just to add that when you mouse-over one of the physical, elemental or poison resistance in the Details, you will see the effective percentage of protection, which INCLUDES the percentage given by the defense. You want this effective percentage to be close to 60%.

Also keep in mind that this effective percentage drops down when you advance in levels, so you have to constantly boost your defense and resistances in order to keep this percentage close to 60%.

The dodge statistic also has effective percentage, which also is shown when you mouse-over it in the Details, and it also drops down when you advance in levels. So keep boosting it too, in order to keep good effective percentage.

There is no soft cap. There is diminishing returns. As you level up, it takes more baseline points to maintain the same percentage of damage mitigation from each type of damage. In example, at level 10 it takes only 90-120 Defense to receive a 50% modifier. At level 50, however, it takes between 800 to 1200 to reach the same 50% mitigation. This applies to each Resistance as well, concerning their separate damage riders.

The reason why +XX All Resist is more attractive is because it applies its bonus to Poison, Elemental and Physical Resistances equally, making the enchantment three times stronger than individual rider enchantments. Conversely, Defense affects every single type of damage in the game. This is key when dealing with monsters that use ARCANE damage, like most Bosses. However, with that said, Defense will also prevent damage from the three other types of damage in equal measure, so don't skimp on Defense if it provides a clear upgrade to "Protection" in the Verbose Comparison tool tips.

The Damage Reduction heading in the Details panel only applies to instances of the specific Skill and Enchantment. It will only show a value when you use equipment that have enchantments, such as the Pilgrim's Sash belt which often comes with "+10% Damage Reduction" or when (as mentioned) you place Katarina in Ghost form, which provides another "10% Damage Reduction". The Damage Reduction Enchantment/Skill will always be the first mitigator applied! which makes it extremely valuable, especially to Umbralists or Protectors who absorb much more damage because they are melee classes.

Aside from a few small distinctions though, I suggest making note of Yami's advice.

Thanks to everyone for adding to this post its so strange to find an actual thread that is helping others and not just rage against the game XD

Thanks, Datguy13, it should be clear for anyone now!

Sadly, this game is no exception, and most of the players want to go through it quickly and to take into the next one. But happily there are ones, which want to get deep into it's beautiful world.

Wow! I've got answers much, MUCH better than I expected!
Thanks a lot, guys/gals!

I was kinda prepared to read stuff like 'you n00b, stop flooding with stoopid questions! hurrr durr'. Hahahahah!

Talking about 'stupid'... fun thing is that all of you mentioned 'when you move your mouse cursor over...' and then I realised that I've always missed that bit because..... I've always played with a controller! So there's no way I could've seen those 'hidden' stats.
:steammocking:
