Nine characters in Fearless or IO1 Mode playing this game, and I've only ever failed this quest once using that strategy. That one time was due to a bug that involved a bad trigger which got fixed in v0.0.3Beta.
Next time, i'll try your method and see how it works (i've had the same ideea on the second time but i didn't go too much in front of him out of fear of not being caught by one of the landing inkgates)
In that case DEVs could have made some kind of indication for that...tried it on hard diffuculty level and one second after accepting quest it was failed. Didn't even have time to see where he went while fighting off those hordes of enemies that just came up from nowhere (on the path to where there are resistance soldiers waiting). It is my first playthrough so next time I know at least what to expect. :-S
