Changing VH:FC Save Game Location
Devs, I love the game alot, and it stays on my system because its such fun, BUT....it always sends the saves to my C: drive.

I recently bought an Alienware Aurora R5 system which has a 256-gig SSD as the boot drive. Problem is that Windows 10 always wants to save EVERYTHING there. Ive done the requisite things to move Steam and almost everything else I can to my data drive. But the saves always go to C: drive.

Is there any way you guys can help out and give us an option for where the save games go?

Thanks in advance.

You NeocoreGames saved files are stored in C:\Users\My Name\Documents\NeocoreGames, correct?

If so, Move your Documents folder to your data drive, you can also Move all of the other 'special folders', those with a non-default icon and Move in their Properties tab:

Sorry but the game is driving this one... I had already moved and properly linked the folders you're discussing before the game was installed. The game installed fine to the data drive...the problem is that the game is pushing the saves to C: drive by default. I am asking the Devs if they can make that configurable for us.

Prolly a lost cause tho, I'm sure they have since moved on.

Where are your saves stored?

Its currently saving it to C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\NeocoreGames\VHFC\Savegame. However, before installing this game via steam, I moved the documents folder for thisPC to my D: drive at D:\xxxx\documents. I just rechecked and the documents folder for ThisPC is still pointing to my D: drive location. So the only thing I can think of is that the game is hard-coded to push saves to the C: drive, since the documents folder has been moved both via settings and explorer link to D: .

So go through your D: - - \documents folder, is there a NeocoreGames folder and does it contain the game saves?

See also Nir Sofer's NTFSLinksView, put the path for the C:\Users --- NeocoreGames folder into the location bar and hit 'Go' - where is the target path?

Well this is where it gets wierd. There is no location tab for C:\Users\xxxx\Documents. There is no NeocoreGames folder in D:\xxxx\Documents. And the link for the ThisPC Documents folder points correctly to D:\xxxx\Documents.

Do you think I should copy the contents of the C:\documents folder to my D: drive and then DELETE the C:\documents folder? I got the impression that the game would not recognize the new location if I just cut and pasted...

Open Explorer and click on your User name folder - in the folders listed in the right pane, do you have any folders listed with 'special' icons?

If you do, check each of their Properties > Location tabs for the location details and list them.

Of course there are, and each points to the correct location for it. I'm talking Contacts, Desktop, Favorites, Links and Saved Games all point to C: drive. Three folders - AppData, Documents and Roaming - have no location tabs to check. AppData and Roaming are both hidden file folders. Saved Games folder is only used for Microsoft games, of which I have none.

The real question here is why VH:FC didnt go to the properly redirected Documents folder when it set up its save location, and my guess is that it's hard-wired into the game itself.

AppData and Roaming shouldn't have a 'special' icon, neither should they have the Move tab.

Did you do the NTFSLinks thing from #5?

This isnt really getting a fix done, I hope the dev's will explain this one, but in the interim it isnt going to hurt to let the items stay on the C: drive. When I get tired of playing, I will manually move the C: drive saves to the D: drive and we will see what happens lol.

The absolute simplest thing the devs could have done was let us select a location for the saves.

No, it's doing some basic checks to try to prevent screwing up your Windows install.
