We're likely not going to see a lot of new modders invested with Lua-code from this point onward which really sucks for the longevity of the game, though porting models alone has thankfully not become any harder as a result.
And thankfully we already have tons of content on the workshop, and I'd wager it's enough to satisfy people for a long time forward. Hopefully this won't even be a noticeable tide-turner then but it's still a significant loss.
On a more conspiratory note, I had a small talk with a friend of mine about these losses as well, and we're both very aware of the fact that a game like S&Box is (seemingly) in development and underway to act as a substitute in a way. Given these recent events, it's very likely that a lot of people are going to abandon Lua and shift over to C#, which would then become the new foundation for modding. This suggests that it is all planned for a migration of sorts. It's not enough to deem a conspiracy alone but I still think it's an interesting point to note.
Didn't think of that, that's pretty ♥♥♥♥. Probably will end up doing gmod lua at some point, i'm learning e2 and that's pretty disappointing.
You can still look at other addons though.
Anyway, I can only really agree with you and say it was a random closing, since Garry didn't say much about his final thoughts beyond the closing message.
Can only hope that they'll eventually give Garry's Mod it's own category on the front-page, just like Facepunch had it laid out. It's a bit of a hassle to find it otherwise.
I can imagine there was a lot of good diagnostics in that forum too. Not just where lua is concerned, but also with what problems people experience every day.
Damn, I don't know, I feel gutted discussing this, because I know there were some really dedicated people there. But I guess this Steam Forum is about the only troubleshooting that's left for people that need help now.
That blog post was a good read though. I'll encourage anybody passing by to read it as well.
The amount of tutorials and information for new developers, gone. Wow.
Garry Newman is a man child, the entire Facepunch team does not care about its users.
One example is with the S&Box development Discord, randomly banning users and the extreme amount of toxicity.
Facepunch is a disgusting development team and the hate that they're getting right now is entirely justified and they deserve more.
The Facepunch forums had a help section that provided tutorials for developers, primarily new developers. Now, if anyone had a question that was already answered, they can no longer Google search the problem and see the Facepunch forum post answering the question. It's literally in the stickied post: https://steamcommunity.com/app/4000/discussions/5/364040961451282698/
Why do you find it so important to publicly advertise that you're a misinformed individual?
