Call of Cthulhu IGN Review
What the hell was this guy smoking? I mean, it's not a bad game, but it's definitely not as amazing as he makes it.

EDIT . . . "Several times I found myself leaning forward in my chair, my brain fully engaged on piecing together what I’d seen, only to lean back with a breath and a “wow” when the answer clicked in my head, not simply because I was told it."

"Pierce always seemed to have the same questions that I had."

"Call of Cthulhu still delivers what is perhaps one of the finest cosmic horror experiences in modern gaming."

F-ing what?

8.6 out of 10 points is more than deserved.

Is it now? Even with the horrible stealth sections? The tacked on fps shooter chapter? The magic lanterns? The linear gameplay after your one and only time in a city hub? Don't get me wrong, I still liked it and had fun playing it, but this game could've been so much more.

I agree. I liked it a lot too. It was very underwhelming. I had a feeling that this game was a result of the devs compromising throghout the development, whether it was because it was a lack of funding, or the publisher butting in, it felt like they had higher ambitions for this title.

i think it was a combination of funding and publishers controling the games outcome, i think you could tell the parts that the devs wanted to care about, such as the walking sim areas and the dock, as oppose to things like the stealth that seems alot like the awkward aminesia stealth that is now kinda outdated imo.

This game is based around water and whaling, and I thought IGN hated water. What gives?

The whole review just seems so out of place, like the reviewer is biased or something and would've given any game that has the word "Cthulhu" in it a better than average score.

its probably one of those super rare cases where game got overpraised, not bashed for some minor flaws.
its kind of sad how little people actually understand about Lovecraft works - only the common tropes like cult, detective, giant monster in the ending.
not bad walking simulator tho

I think the game deserves a 10 out of 10, so I don't understand why the reviewer cut that much point.

If you believe this game is not lovecraftian, I suggest you start reading some Lovecraft stories and Chaosium products.

If you want good Cthulhu story better try The Last Door. It is a way better than this game.

well man, i dont know.
i think games like dark wood or bloodborne are much more lovecraftian then this.
In those games you dont even have a proper story to progress, but manage to tell a much better tale still.
You dont have journal entires or books lying around, no characters who will just explain exposition to you for no reason - you have to search far and wide to find clues and bring pieces together like a detective, not just pressing E to solve a puzzle becouse character is a detective.
I always thought cosmic horror is about insignificance of human existence and feeling of alienation and here we have a GOD visiting you becouse you one-of-a-kind, unique, special chosen one who cant even die becouse your destiny dont allow it, i mean come on, what is this ?

Man, Darkwood was soooo good

"...no characters who will just explain exposition to you".... oh jeesh, that's funny, given how even H.P. Lovecraft's original book The Shadow over Innsmouth had such a character: Zadok Allen's only role in the book was the fill you with exposition after which he disappears from the story.

Elitists like this who go on about how "well, this isn't Lovecraftian..." are just silly - "being more holy than the Pope" would be the appropriate wording in this case.

does that mean devs in 2018 should fallow hundred year old tropes ?
its not like Lovecraft wes developing videogames back in 1931 jeez.

Seems like this is one of those love it or hate it games. I usually love these kinds of experiences because, good or bad, they tend to be different.

I'm enjoying it, although I don't love The Shambler gameplay sections. I do see some excellent reminders in this thread for other games I need to revisit at some point.
