Unsolvable sliding tiles puzzle?
No matter what I try I always end up with a configuration where I have two tiles in the wrong position. I've made a screenshot but I don't now how to include it here. As far as I can tell the puzzle in it's current form is unsolvable, since there is no way to slides the tiles around just to switch the position of two tiles. I would just hit the "skip" button if I weren't trying to get the achievement for not hitting it. Did anyone manage to actually solve the puzzle and if so how did you manage to switch the two tiles into the correct position. Which sequence of moves does this require?

I did it yesterday, I often ended up with 2 being all that's out of place, but it is doable- best to start fresh at that - or you can watch a video of someone doing gameplay and just move the puzzle pieces as they do- kind of the long way around, but you'll get passed it that way. Personally I can't stand this type of puzzle (sliding/mosaic), I prefer being able to swap the pieces instead of sliding, which is just irritating 'to me'.

Just gave it another go and managed it in under two minutes. Don't know if I should be glad or angry.

I know what you mean, I hate slider puzzles so much. I even got stuck on this one for so long I finally decided to skip it, essentially forcing myself to play the game from the beginning later to get the no skip achievement.

I might've stuck with the puzzle a bit longer if the game didn't have a nonsensical achievement for completing the game in under 4 hours. That has no place in a game like this, you're supposed to be able to take your time and enjoy the ride. I play HOGs to relax, not to wind myself up.

I missed that achievement by just a few minutes (my play time says four hours so I must have been close) which is largely because if this puzzle. I would be temped to go back and finish the game again if I didn't have several dozen other HOGs to play. And you're right, an achievement like that doesn't fit with a game like this. It makes sense in a game like Resident Evil 4, which you're likely to replay several times anyway but not in a HOG like this. I remember a similar infuriating achievement for an adventure game which also required you to finish it within a certain time limit. On the first try no less.

Stuck on this also. I have all but the last 2 tiles in place, these being the 2 at the top of the 2 left side columns. Does anyone have a solution to swith these last 2 tiles please?

If you're stuck, pull up a walkthrough video of someone doing the puzzle, move yours according to it.

Cheers Storm_at_Sea I've tried doing that but the puzzle tiles seem to open up in random positions on each playthrough of the game so following a guide doesn't help. Also the official guide on Big Fish (http://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/walkthrough/abandoned-chestnut-lodge-walkthrough/) doesn't show a solution to the puzzle either! Getting a right headache! :steamfacepalm:

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that (It's been so long since I've played I didn't remember!). Usually puzzles like this I have to just luck out on, if you get too frustrated, walk away from it for a bit, then come back to it- it helps often, for me when something has me stumped. Sometimes upon returning I just ace whatever it was- guess it helps some of us to just have a break sometimes (tho this isn't fool-proof, unfortunately!).

Think I'll do that, seems like I've been trying for hours! Funny thing is I used to play these as a kid and I never had any problems solving them, the only thing that is different is that they were 4x4 and not 3x4! I don't know what the difference is, surely the fundamentals are the same!?! :-/

Glad to hear it, funny enough I had the same experience. Couldn't get the puzzle done after trying for at least an hour and posted this entry. Reloaded my game a day later and finished it within two minutes :steamfacepalm:. Can't explain how or why I couldn't do it one day and aced it the next.

If you get the puzzle that ends like this with two pieces switched it is unsolvable - it is presumably caused by the developers starting the puzzle in a state with pieces placed at random. 50% of the time (if I remember) that will break the puzzle. The correct way to initialize a puzzle like this is the same way you would do it with a real one, start in the correct finished state and just do a bunch of random moves until things are mixed up enough.

See the Sam Loyd section in:

I've read it and you're right, that's probably what happened. I must have gotten an unsolvable state the first time and a solvable one the second time around.:hmm:
