Hylics
What am I missing?
One of those games that has overwhelmingly positive reviews, then turns out to be an absolute snoozefest... So what am I missing?

Missing the right game for you. Shoot your arrow again.

EDIT: Should actually elaborate a little. Mason Lindroth's games are more on the artistic side rather than on gameplay side. Art projects, more or less. Hylics 2 is more fleshed out (and also looks cleaner), so you could check that out -- people say that Hylics 2's gameplay is better, sacrificing a bit of the wild design side for it (music sounds rather reasonable, and again, it looks cleaner). The game might actually be not for you.

Hylics 1 is kinda slow to start, but once you get to act 2 it starts to ramp up a lot, imo

skill issue
Just not your cup of tea. For me I just enjoyed wandering around finding things and making my party stronger. I enjoyed the art and music and thought the combat and zones were really fun. I found it just a brilliant game to get immersed in but it's not going to be like that for everyone.

used to feel the same way, there were just a bunch of things I didn't like about it but if you want my opinion, I'd recommend just being a little open, accept the weird stuff, don't read into everything someone says and take everything pretty vaguely, also just explore a lot, if you feel stuck just wandering around will help you find what you need usually, so check old areas and the solutions to issues are pretty self explanatory. If you do all that you can enjoy the game I'd say, as a very open world with good likes and interesting sounds. If you're not enjoying it, maybe leave it for a bit and come back, I've had this game since 2020 but only finished it this year because I wasn't getting into it so maybe you're the same. :dsmagic:
that's just not yours

it probably isn't in your strike zone, right? i mean, if you only play games because they have positive reviews overall then what do you even like; based on the amount of reviews this one has, it definitely is a niche game, people that played it and reviewed it are clearly people that like this style of game, it's not a game like counter strike 2 that aims at a larger audience hence many different people plays it and also makes reviews on it, resuming: you shouldn't judge or make any assumptions on this game just because of how "positive" the reviews are, but if it looks interesting to you or not. steam literally does a thing where it says you may or may not like this game based on other stuff you've played, next time maybe check that before buying. it's not hate but, for me, even if baldur's gate 3 has overwhelmingly positive reviews i won't buy it because i know i don't enjoy that kind of game
