Maybe also activate Mayhem mode (and if just a lower level of it) so that everything scales with you properly. Otherwise stuff may bore the hell out of you. I don't think guns get blatantly stronger per-se in terms of direct stats with higher Mayhem levels (everyone else please correct me on that if wrong), but the chances of them spawning with good anointments/buffs that can significantly improve the performance of gear and of your skills (there are anoinments that heavily buff Iron Bear directly) is much higher. But it can be very hard to chew through enemies at too high Mayhem levels at first, at least without Iron Bear. You can test it out yourself, switching Mayhem levels generally is very easy to do on the fly, especially if you're in Sanctuary. I enjoyed experimenting with it more often than not.
Be aware that vehicle combat can be needlessly difficult when having higher levels of Mayhem mode enabled. Whenever I had quests that involved vehicle usage I disabled Mayhem. I also disabled it when I did some Vault Card challenges that involved a large number of kills of XYZ. My impression was that these challenges (or more precisely their XP rewards) do not benefit too much from Mayhem, if at all. And when it comes down to it you can (I guess) always do like 99% of the kills without Mayhem and then the last few ones needed to finish the challenge with it.
