The one element that you miss out when playing solo is the extra banter heroes have with eachother during missions and open world. Other than that its just a matter of preference, if you like playing with friends do it, otherwise play solo anyways.
all borderlands games are developed as solo games with the possibility for co-op
and how they are developed they shine mostly as solo games and have the best experience being played solo.
only exception I am willing to make is playing as the ice queen in TPS since she has a full skill tree developed for co-op.
a full lobby or just 1-2 friends is nice and very fun but the solo experience is much more greater as you can pace the game however it lets you and the scaling is made for solo players and way more refined then with multiple people.
Playing with more people will give rather similar loot if the loot is shared:
There are more enemies and the loot is of better quality on average - sure - buuut there are now also more people wanting that loot.
