Also, you can always use a save editor to give yourself a push, whether it’s big or small. There’s absolutely no shame whatsoever in doing whatever you want with your game to make it an enjoyable experience for yourself, especially if you paid your own money for it.
To the OP, I've only actually played that side quest once, and yeah, I used the upgrades. If I ever bother with it again though I probably will avoid them for the heck of it.
