Wait till you have finished the story cause at least then everything can be on your level and you can use Mayhem-levels to make the enemis not die from being looked at the wrong way.
Recently replayed just the main story with a different character from level 1. There were only two cases where I was severely under leveled (-3 levels) for the next story chapter, but even with that difference, it wasn't a struggle in BL3 for some reason, whereas in BL1 and BL2 such discrepancy led to all sorts of problems.
BL3 has so much loot dropping everywhere, chances are that you will quickly replace the item that you got from doing a side mission anyway.
Also I might be doing it wrong but at least in BL2 on the mission description preview, which was still vague, one at least could see if it rewards an item or just XP with money. In BL3 there's nothing of the sorts, just the small window with 1-2 sentences and that's it.
A lot of them I'll just do because ... sure, why not? I'm here to shoot stuff anyway.
