can i get to max lvl without finishing the campaign

just got the game and was wondering if can get to lvl 72 by playing dlc's or the slaughterhouse wave based modes

yes - you can. But there really is no benefit to that: You want to finish the story so you can unlock all areas and thus all enemies and item-drops.

But you can just keep grinding a single area to max level.

It is possible, but it will take MUCH more time this way because most of the enemies will not scale to your level without mayhem mode.

Well, actually daily and weekly challenges in the vault cards can help you lvl up even in the underleveled locations. (You need some season pass 2 DLC to unlock them)

But you will still need to finish main campaign to unlock many stuff, including mayhem mode, guardian rank, endgame raids (proving grounds and takedowns)...

Yup just better to finish the story it's not that hard.

You can. Rare enemies, Hammerlock's hunts and Zer0's targets always scale to your level in normal playthrough, but as others have said, it's not worth it. It's beneficial to do it after you beat the campaign because of the unlocks.

I would question why.... is your goal to get to L72 as quick as possible?

I made the mistake of over-levelling in BL2; each map was slightly below par which made enemies easier (lower level) but gear drops weren't as good. I realised I needed to stop loitering and progress quicker if I was to rush into tougher enemies (but gave better gear drops).

(I'm also grinding for BARs, so doing the reverse: finding inventive ways of killing without gaining XP)

Yeah, I wanna lvl up as soon as possible that way I can make the ultimate decision on who I'm going to grind out the most of the four, cause l prefer investing mostly in one character that I definitely will enjoy playing than playing everyone in the game (just a personal preference) also I heard the games story is the worst in the series

While that is the case - you can get through it decently quickly.

You don't need to pay attention to the story, just rush the main quests as fast as possible to gain access to Mayhem mode which makes XP farming a lot faster. Because while you technically can lvl up to 72 before finishing the main story, I guarantee you that you don't want to do that.

From the main story quests ? Which one(s) are you thinking about ? because I'm pretty sure they are all trash.

Some are pretty good the issue is obviously player level and I was referring to regular and side quest rewards.

Most quest rewards are trash really, the few that are worth something you don't have to hold off on completing the main quest to get them on lvl 72 afterwards. The only quest reward that you might have to give up is the ember's purge, depending on whether Ember's quests are before or after the scraptrap nest (I don't remember), which is the best XP farm spot. But other than that I'm pretty sure you don't lose any worthy quest rewards by leveling to 72 the optimal way.

You can get embers purge using diamond key at least though I wish those were easier to farm instead of just pure trash rng.
