About actors, I don't care, if they're good enough then they will adapt totally the character in their way of acting even if they will appear a little different compare to what we know.
Wrong casting and poor script will be surefire death-knell for any attempt at a Borderlands movie/show.
Cate Blanchett might nab Oscars at will, but even she cannot turn back time to become the young Siren whom we BL fans know and love as Lilith the Redhead Siren who saved Pandora.
But then again, recent Indiana Jones movie showed a young Harrison Ford in several scenes, so is Hollywood taking the easy way out by casting an old-but-gold actress for a key character role in the Borderlands movie, knowing it has the moolah and the technology to de-age her for some key scenes?
I don't think so. Hollywood is cashing in on the Borderlands franchise, and using famous stars to get in the non-gamer audiences worldwide. Easy money.. or so it thinks. (Methinks Borderlands movie will flop. But then again Hollywood may be deliberately shaping this movie into a disaster, maybe for money laundering purposes? Or as a cheap re-launch vehicle for "has been" actors?)
This wrong approach will backfire. The actors must suit the roles. The characters shouldn't be rewritten to fit some known stars/names.
See how Hollywood is butchering the Borderlands casting:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4978420/fullcredits
*Sigh*.. i do not know whether to jeeringly laugh at this casting idiocy, or to sigh with resigned frustration..
Seriously, Hollywood?! IS THIS YOUR BEST ATTEMPT AT A BORDERLANDS CAST?
* Kevin Hart as Roland?! He is too short and too annoying to be THE commando leader who formed and led the Crimson Raiders!
* Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis?! She's too old, and she doesn't have nervous madcap energy that Tannis has. And if we imagine Ms. Curtis as a Siren (Tannis is a Siren, for those who rolled in late)? Just ridiculous!
* Gina Gershon as Moxxi?! Where is the sultry oomph factor that Moxxi exudes?
* Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina? Who's she? Oh, she starred in Barbie movie in a side role, and as young Ahsoka Tano in the Star Wars: Ahsoka series. She may have fit those roles, but she doesn't look anything like the annoying adorable deadly Tiny Tina we fans love and are afraid of (in case, she randomly gets upsets and triggers a kaboom under our bar stools when we are flirting with Mad Moxxi!)!
Why Disney, why?!
The fact that Hollywood/Disney is willing to screw up the casting in such an awful manner, indicates that the movie's writing/screenplay will be atrocious too. Remember, Sweet Baby Inc, consults for Hollywood studios too, so the same woke mindless trash writing that plagues BL3 is likely to invade this upcoming Borderlands movie too. In fact, the atrocious casting may be due to such insidious "consulting"!
To put it into context why this Borderlands movie has a lot riding on it...
It's because the video game industry has typically fared poorly in the hands of the Hollywood execs. (See the long list below..)
Fallout got a good OTT show - at least, its first season is really good and enjoyable, staying true to the roots of the game lore and environments while still creating new ground with a perfect cast. Lots of little easter eggs and tropes sprinkled in the show for the fans to uncover and enjoy.
Halo movie was meh. Halo Legends (seven short animated films from Japan's greatest anime directors and studios) was much better than the recent Halo movie. Halo 5 game was bad too (good in some respects, but its story and some ideas were so bad that even the devs decided they are not canon for future sequels). Fans of Halo series deserved better. Halo Infinite is a redemption of sorts.
Uncharted movie (starring Spidey star Tom Holland and action star Mark Wahlberg) was really bad and even kids didn't like it (except for that aerial fight on flying ships, which was not canon anyway). The Uncharted short by Nathan Fillion was much better, and he was/is an apt Nathan Drake according to fans.
Most video-game-to-movie adaptations have failed:
https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/video-game-movies/
But in the ongoing era of mindless keep-your-brain-at-home blockbusters that easily triumph over good script/character-driven movies (that fade into oblivion; or lf lucky, into "cult classic" territory), the astounding lack of creativity in Hollywood is exemplified by the below humongous list of many video games being made into movies or OTT shows, within the next year or so.
Why do we gaming fans get the sinking feeling that most of these movies/shows will be flops?
Bad adaptations dishearten the fans, but unfortunately the fans do not have a say in these upcoming projects. Even a bonafide star like Henry Cavill, who was so perfect as Geralt the Witcher, and who's a passionate fan of the games and books -- he was treated so badly by the Hollywood honchos and writers that he opted out of the Witcher show finally -- because they deliberately deviated from canon despite his objections and insights, and callously butchered the Butcher of Blaviken (Geralt the White Wolf) character. Jack Gyllenhal is stepping into that role, but the show is already dead in the minds of the Witcher and Cavill fans.

I agree with you. With the same budget and VFX tools that were used for the Uncharted movie, a much better movie could have been made. The movie felt like some cheapskate Indiana Jones ripoff that was simply rebadged as Uncharted. Neither Tom Holland nor Mark Wahlberg were suitable for that movie, despite their past credentials as action stars, and the movie turned out to be an expensive mess.
I didn't even see the Last of Us show for a long time, because I didn't like the casting (except for Pedro Pascal - that guy tends to do justice to whatever role he picks up), and the show was terribly paced and screenplayed, with hardly any thrills or chills.
But I would highly recommend to see the recent Fallout show (Season 1 is out on Amazon Prime). It is really good. Fans of the game series may nitpick on a few things, but it has an excellent cast, perfect pacing (the slow moments add the backstories and lore so newbies to the lore don't get confused or lost), gorgeous environments, thrilling fights/encounters, and does a lot of justice to the game lore and locations, and the attention to detail on the show is frankly astounding (the showmakers even got Fallout creator Todd Howard to agree to give them access to thousands of 3D models of the assets used in the games. so they could be 3D printed and painted to be shown in the show, so Fallout fans are literally combing through each scene to find and tag these easter eggs in the show. Fun times!
I also feel that some games are so good or distinct on story, that a real life adaptation is a waste (this is my Last of Us critique), or just does a disservice to the game story. Your either copying a story already done with the same character to where there are no real surprises, or your setting something so distantly related to said story that it barely takes place in same world.
This is where Fallout did it right. Didn't copy any games story, but still made it feel distinctly part of the world game takes place in.
In this case, I feel they are making every mistake. Focusing on characters and butchering them with bad casting choices, and almost certainly looks as if due to that they are going to be copying or butchering the actual story line in game. We are ending up with a short Roland, and old Lilith, and a Tina who is somehow between the ages of 2 and 3 Tina, which doesn't work with Roland around.
If your going to in any way do the story of the games (rather than something original in the same world), there is really only 1 casting choice to start with, and personally be the only reveal I would have done. You start with Jack, and you simply reveal Jack and his mask. That would have been enough for any real Borderlands fan to get hyped over.
Unfortunately, I also feel like one of the best actors you could have had for Jack, already got snagged by the team doing the Fallout series. Another good choice thou I feel would be Timothy Oliphant. I feel like its a villain role he would just really get into, and be able to pull off the mocking disdain Jack does so well. Basically take the hacker villain he did that one Die Hard movie, and ratchet up the performance factor to 11.
Better in my mind would be do something based between 2 and 3, as a movie. Forget about Roland as casting goes, let the dead rest. Cast some good choices for Gaige, Axton, Krieg, Maya, etc, to better match the older than 2, younger than 3 Tina casting choice and do an original story. Hell hire some of the people that used to work at Telltale before they folded. They had some decent ideas on the first Tales game.
* Roland:
Michael B. Jordan (think: Killmonger in a soldier commando leader avatar; he has that commanding screen presence and dangerous-if-provoked energy that would suit Roland character)
* Lilith:
Amanda Seyfried or Emma Stone (they are not natural redheads, but they can act well, and would suit a powerful Siren role). Jennifer Lawrence is a bit old, but she can do the role well too). Isla Fisher, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson can do the older Lilith role justice. Emma Watson could be used for a young Lilith cameo, if Kristen Stewart is cast for older Lilith role - they look like sisters (but Kristen is kinda wooden actor, though she did manage some action scenes in her Twilight movies. I stopped watching her movies after she cheated on Robert Pattinson and broke his heart, so I'm not sure if her acting has improved in recent movies).
* Brick:
Dave Bautista (he's old, but we need a Brick who's amiable, hilarious and yet a good devil-unleashed melee brawler, and Bautista is a good fit; can't recall any younger WWE/MMA wrestler who has the acting chops like Bautista has shown in his Hollywood career).
* Mordecai:
Ethan Hawke (name and face is a match - do we even need to talk of someone else?)
* Tannis:
Rachel McAdams (she's old too, but she has that nervous restless energy that Tannis has, so she would be a good fit - Tannis need not be a young role, as she's usually on the sidelines; I am trying to think of a younger actress with similar energy, can someone recommend here? Maybe Mila Kunis? But she can't act that well. For that nervous madcap energy, Keira Knightley or Natalie Portman would be apt, but they are a somewhat older too, and Keira doesn't look like Tannis.)
* Claptrap: voiced by Tom Kenny (of SpongeBob SquarePants, Wheelie the Decepticon Transformer fame) - we need someone whose voice is annoying & fast, yet comprehensible
* Moxxi: Kat Dennings or Alexandra Daddario (ahem, someone "well endowed" and sultry, who can bring the oomph seductive factor to a scene, without looking too sleazy or try-hard). Megan Fox would have been a good fit as Moxxi a few years ago (she can't act well, but she did show her sultry side in a few movies; and let's face it, Moxxi has been criminally underused in the Borderlands series, and even her dalliances with Handsome Jack and others weren't explored properly, even in the DLCs; so Moxxi was relegated to a sultry pub/bar owner role, who gives a few side quests to keep the vaultt hunters coming back to her pub/bar).
* Scooter: Tom Hiddleston (Loki; need I say more? Well, I shall. If the Loki character felt tailormade for Tom Hiddleston, because of that mischievous cunning always-forgotten-but-daredevil-playmaker-behind-the-scenes son-of-a-frost-giant anti-hero-who-dies-to-save-his-brother-he-hated energy, then it's apt for Scooter character too, whose life's arc rose from a simple son-of-a-bandit-queen to genius-mechanic to a rich baron-with-a-heart-of-gold owner of global Catch-a-Ride network to Sanctuary's-resident-genius-engineer to the martyr-Hero-who-deserved-better). Alan ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ would have also made a perfect Scooter, in his younger age.
* Handsome Jack:
@Darth Cannanis suggested Timothy Oliphant for this ultra-important Handsome Jack role, and I agree he would be a great fit.
If we want a slightly younger actor, then Antony Starr would be apt - he was perfect as the maniacal anti-hero/villain Homelander in The Boys series.
A younger Gary Oldman, Christoph Waltz, Willem Dafoe, Kevin Spacey, Hugo Weaving, Daniel Day-Lewis, Anthony Hopkins or Jack Nicholson would also be apt for that role, but they are all quite old (60+) now.
I think Leonardo DiCaprio can do that Handsome Jack role well (similar to his maniacal cunning Mr. Calvin character in Django Unchained movie), but sometimes he tends to go overboard with his acting, but then again, Handsome Jack is an exaggerated character as well. Not sure if Leo can do that maniacal cackle/laugh well though, LOL.
I think the only right casting Disney has done for this Borderlands movie is Jack Black as Claptrap. He can do justice to that quirky annoying adorable bot role, though I would have prefered a voice actor with a more high pitched (squeaky) voice. That's why I suggest Tom Kenny for this Claptrap role, since he did that squeaky annoying nervous madcap voice acting for Wheelie the deceptive Decepticon very well.
Well to be fair, one can't always get the actors they want, even if they are a director.
Sometimes actors pass on a role, or can't be affordable.
Sometimes you have to take what you can get, but keep in mind there are times when what you got is so costly yet so wrong you'd be better off with an entire cast of unknowns.
I leave it for debate whether we'd be better off with unknowns in the real life casting case.
The cast of the upcoming film (that has been in the works for quite some time now, years even) definitely do not literally shout "YES!" in my opinion. Not a fan of Kevin. Ford v. Ferrari did as an example. Last year's Gran Turismo film had a lineup of actors I had never heard of or seen, but I watched it on opening weekend and it was an enjoyable movie.
I will stilll plan on watching it just to see how much disappointment will it bring and would love to be proven wrong. Lastly, will probably be flak'd for it but the movie should have been a 3D adaptation and not a live-action movie. Disney has focused a lot on live-action because they're deseparate as of the last 4-5 years.
I edited with some more casting in my comment above. Let me know if you guys have some alternate or better recommendations for these pivotal Borderlands characters.
Disney should have simply filmed Borderlands movie as a cartoon movie (think Justice League style slick 2D animation movies) to introduce the BL universe and main characters & plot to the non-gamers audience (this approach would have saved a ton of money on the CGI and sets), and then spinned it off as an OTT series with more episodes and characters. This OTT series could be even made campy and tongue-in-cheek hilarious, ala Simpsons, Archer and Lower Decks (Star Wars), so it gains a cult following in the long run.
Alternatively, Disney could also have made this Borderlands movie into a thrilling 3D cartoon, with extraordinary level of motion-captured action and intense scenes & quirky characters, like the Arcane: League of Legends series. That would be perfect, but cost more.
Instead, we see the bad cast and wrong direction that Disney is headed with this Borderlands movie, so I have no hopes on this movie being any good. It will not even be campy bad, so it won't become a cult classic of the bad-campy-movies-you-must-watch-when-stoned-or-drunk kind. This movie will be dud and DoA (Dead on Arrival).
I get the feeling that this is a money laundering scheme masquerading as a movie deliberately being shaped to be a flop.
Fallout show is an excellent example of a video game adaptation done right. Take the environments, tropes, NPC species, monsters, costumes, etc., and do something new and refreshing (but in a familiar tone) with it all. And the show is filled with easter eggs! What treat for us gamers! It's currently at a 8.5 rating on IMDB, it's so good!
Hey, how could I forget Handsome Jack in my list of actors-to-BL-characters thought experiment?! LOL.
Yeah, Timothy Oliphant would be great for that Handsome Jack role.

It works too damn well. I think he could do the dual role of 2 same looking characters with divergent personalities, and he fact that the real body double's name happens to be what it is is just icing on the cake.
This is doubly cool, so Timothy is a perfect fit for the role, LOL.
