for me, i already got my wish of good customizable ai teammates in borderlands-like games in god eater 2+3. maybe there are other borderlands-like games that have smart customizable ai teammates, but sorry i can't think of others at the moment.
I don't see the issue with them implementing it now since BL3 is more advanced. There's numerous times you have allies travelling with you in the missions here and there so I dont see what the issue is. If the companion traversal is a problem just have them teleport to you or something.
Plus fleshing out characters would require competent writers which we can tell from 3 onwards isn’t the case.
Besides an ai companion wouldn't be the same as an actual person.
Having A.I. teammates will not fix that as they still aren't real. Why not use voice chat? That way you are interacting with your "friends" instead of them being essentially a more random A.I.
personally playing with ai teammates is more fun for me because i can customize their skills and cosmetics to my discretions, and their personalities and stories make me more immersed in the game world, while playing with human teammates usually break immersion and i have to juggle emotions to compromise with their demands and keep the atmosphere fun for the party... maybe its because i'm sick of the numerous harassment and pressures from my own teammates during my dota2 LoL years (ironically most enemies i encountered there are usually polite or just silent). i have no regrets leaving the MoBA esports world.
