Fl4k's ability seems underwhelming. Is he even worth playing?
His animal companion thingy does barely any damage, I've tried all of them and even their abilities (throw barrel, charge, vomit) seem pretty bad. Am I looking at this the wrong way? Even his perks don't look all that great.

I love playing him. His companion is a great distraction and can get decently powerful if you invest in the right tree.

what tree would that be?

FL4K crit build, despite the nerf, is a huge boss melter even on Mayhem 3

flak is probably the strongest among the four hunter

He can basically turn invisible and spam crit. That build is pretty gear dependant though.

Beasts work as a distraction most of the time but if you put enough points into green skill tree you'll deal lots of critical damage. Pick COV weapon and annihilate enemies with your active ability.

Yup, he's really fun to play.
I'm playing with his cloak ability and with a sniper rifle or shotgun it can deal huge amount of damage.
His pets are also usefull, not only they deal dmg and can take some fire out of you, everyone have unique ability. So you kinda always have 2 skills to use.
Fl4k have good skills to be fun solo character. Green tree have few skills that give you health regen, max health, damage reduction and the best of them- one gives your pet ability to revive you, which can be helpful when playing solo.

Pets can do quite a lot of damage tbh, I'm now at lvl 40 and my Jabber with smg and a rocket launcher can output noticeable damage.

Yeah, at the beggining I thought the same. Later you can "evolve" (?) pets into better ones, changing how they atack, their abilities and stat boosts that they gives to you.

Imo, give him some time and skill points. I like him, and would definitely recomend him.

I play FL4K and Amara on EGS.
Amara excels at mobbing. FL4K is a good boss killer because of his crit build.
I use the Rakk attack to trigger it over and over.
The pet, for me, is just a revive tool. I do not depend on it for anything else.

He's still worth playing BUT his damage comes from his ability to land insane amounts of crit damage using fade away. If youre trying to build something around the pets its probably a waste of time. His pet is nothing more than a decoy really.

I don't even have to use my gun's I simply select a side quest and send my pets to do my bidding. If you are an animal lover look no further as your Rocket Ape can 1 shot almost any regular mob and melt bosses/badasses. I used to mix blue and green as this would give you a melee tank ape that could also switch to rocket on command and obliterate anything. Also anytime he kills something the attack command is reset if you skill the green tree properly. Once you get the legendary flak mod for Rakk spam its GG. I only use bullets because its borderlands and why not shoot guns. Otherwise between Ape Rocket Spam and Rakk Spam there is nothing that stands in our path. So to summarize, Green to start with a mix of blue when you can for the gamma burst. Switch to Orange and green when you get the legendary mod. I got mine from the eridian trials. Going to start my gunner character now as I just finished my lvl 50 flak and story. Oh yeah and the orange tree gives you free crits so you can be even lazier, no aiming required and pets kill whatever you deem too ugly to look at.

The pet is a support more than anything, pick the pet that bring the most interesting passive for you instead of looking for pet damages, it's like Mordecai build full crit and you are good.
