Please tell me there's a way to lower bloom
It's set horribly high and makes some builds really hard to play without nearly being blinded in every fight.

Does anyone know of a way to shut it off or turn it down?

sounds like there is something wrong with your monitor, there is barely any bloom at all in the game

This, I honestly only noticed bloom on some character skins that are super glowing

There is a menu item in the settings : calibrate monitor. Maybe this?

So is there a different term I should be using for what's happening in this frame?

oh thats a bug if the bloom is set high. just press ESC and resume the game and it should be fixed.
If you look at the picture I linked, pressing ESC doesn't alleviate that.

for some reason people love these awful artsy effects.
One Elf Mar 18, 2020 @ 11:53pm
I haven't found a answer for this still. The more I play the worse it gets. First the game had no bloom. Now I can't see past any gun with bloom on it. No it's not my monitor, only BL3 does this. Monitors don't change ingame effects.

thats not bloom thats lense flare, its known to happen on unreal engine games, Mass Effect used it quite a bit too

Good point I forget lens flare exists :T

Still really bad. This is the worse case i've seen.

Blooming is the optical effect where light from a bright source (such as a glint) appears to leak into surrounding objects.

Lens flare refers to a phenomenon wherein light is scattered or flared in a lens system, often in response to a bright light, producing a sometimes undesirable artifact within the image.

Google is amazing. ;p

With those definitions, I believe bloom is the culprit here. Bloom is a 'soft light' effect. But, in this case it's pretty bright. You're in a cave, and it seems to be night time. An explosion is going to be pretty bright that close, in a dark area.

It's Borderlands, this is nothing. I remember back when people found the Norfleet in BL2, it was like a disco. ;p

You can turn your monitor brightness down a bit to counter the brightness of the bloom in this game...but you'd have to turn it back up for other stuff. Unless you have a monitor/program that can set different display defaults.

Use a different weapon that doesn't produce these effects?

I haven't noticed an issue personally. Pretty normal for me.

You can't just turn this down man. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/344992869913722880/690077109531705361/unknown.png

I forgot where I put the other screenshots. It's basically increasing to the point where anything with the effect turns my screen just that color, night or day. God forbid I use Phaseslam or anything that spawns arms from the left tree. I generally don't complain about things I can change. I dealt with sunrise level bloom and lens flares from Warframe back in the day. However it's extremely difficult to simply deal with something that blinds you 90% of the time your playing.

I gotta say. It's the worse in vaults and on E6.

First off try this:

Try disabling SSR (Screen Space Reflections) in the options menu.

If that doesn't work...try this (lol >_<):

Navigate to C:\Users\GIGABYTE\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 3\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

Replace GIGABYTE with your comps login name and you can copy/paste that into the URL bar of any folder you open (or just manually nav to it)

I always recommend backing things up so create a folder called "Backups", copy&paste engine.ini into that folder.

now go back to the original engine.ini and open it, you'll see something like:

[Core.System]

so that it looks like:

Save and exit, make sure to right-click engine.ini and set it to "Read Only" or the game will default it back after the next gaming session with the game. (BL2 had this annoying reset thing too)

Sorry for the long response but I didn't want to leave any room for error since editing .ini files can cause issues if done incorrectly.

Also keep in mind disabling Bloom can cause other in-game effects to not render at all and other light sources may appear muted.

Do you happen do have an HDR monitor or similar? Maybe that's the issue? But even with that, screenshots shouldn't have the effect.

I was also thinking about turning off the SSR as That Blind Person says above. And maybe the AO?

That is pretty bright though.

With my previous answer, I wasn't trying to be a smart a$$ or anything. Although it does seem to come across that way cause reading text it's hard to get tone. My apologies if it sounded crass/harsh or anything. :)

This is a head scratcher for me.

EDIT

Here's a few screens I literally just took of an explosion for me.

I wish I could provide actual help outside of what I tried. :(

No I don't have an HDR monitor.
Honestly, the screenshot I took was the most blatant example. Another would be trying to hip-fire the Maliwan sniper that charges and fires a single round.

Hi. Still no tweaks for that ? I love the game but the lights and the bloom are really tiring my eyes.
