They along with just playing the game earn you vault card experience points.
When you get enough points you level up your selected vault card.
Levelling up the vault card grants you access to a vault card chest.
When you open a chest you might get:
Gear from the weekly loot pool (very low chance) (weekly loot pool is stuff that Maurice is selling from his black market vending machine that changes each week)
A cosmetic item from its Vault Card (about a 1 in 3 chance)
Some Eridium (about every 7th time)
One Vault Card Key (about a third of the time)
Three Vault Card Keys (similar chance to Eridium)
One Diamond Key to use in the Diamond Armory (low chance)
You spend the Vault Card keys to get the Vault card gear.
