Should I play with Events disabled or enabled?
Just realised they are off by default. It's my first playthrough so just want to experience the game's single player and get as many achievements as I can.

If you have events turned on during the story play through you will earn more XP and have access to some better weapons, This could be a good thing or a bad thing for your first play through.
Some people like to level up as quickly as possible so they only have to farm weapons at the highest level to get the best end game build.
The events used to be seasonal but they decided to make them always available when the game got old.

There's no achievements for the events but like spoggie stated it's a good way to get extra exp for faster leveling.

I will say always turn on the revenge of cartels event because it's literally just a side quest where you have to find rings which drop from thugs with neon all over them and they spawn randomly on the map, when you have enough rings, you can teleport to a villa and kill the boss there for good loot which scale with your level, so basically, if you are bored with your weapons and it feel weak, you can just teleport to the villa, kill the boss, get a better loot and continue to play your main story campaign. (this event also have some good legendaries ,too).

Cartels is always good bonus loot and XP. After you unlock your spaceship and start the quest, some enemies will have glowy stuff on their head, killing them spawns more elite guys and sometimes one of the 4 Cartel minibosses. The minibosses can drop all their real loot, which is some of the best in the game.

You may just want to disable it when you do the "True" Maliwan Takedown and Trials on max level with max Mayhem, unless your build is so strong that it just blows everything up regardless.

IIRC the Cartel mobs don't spawn in the Guardian Takedown, Hemovorous' lair, and some of the separate DLC maps. But that's nothing to worry about while you still explore the story campaign.

Thanks very much. I think I might wait until I've made more progress so I still have a sense of the vanilla game as I still have all the DLC to play through too. I think they made a great choice making the events permanent and it would be great if other devs (Darkening of Tristram xD) followed suit.

Thanks everyone else too. I might turn the Cartel one on soon in that case. :)
