What is the appeal of Borderlands?
Think I've played about 15 hours across the games (except Pre-Sequel) and have just started 3 for the first time recently.

For a series to have such wide popularity, I'd like to know what makes it special to you?

How many hours have you played? Which game is your favourite?

Why do you keep coming back?

What is the great appeal about this series - is it just FPS Diablo? Something more?

What does it mean to you?

Guess it depends on each game release for me anyway. For most they would agree it’s the rpg loot mechanics. For each release this is was my view at the time:

Bl1: a new IP with random gun loot mechanics. I enjoyed it but it’s pretty vanilla in terms of shooting and writing

Bl2: was a massive step up from the first I enjoyed the guns, new classes and the villain and dlcs were great and still are.

Pre-sequel:Played years after release was a solid companion piece to bl2. Probably the most unique classes in the series.

Bl3: like 2 massive gameplay improvement, classes while cool feel like a combination of past classes. Also while the writing wasn’t great in past games it’s the most grating in 3 more so with repeat playthroughs.

the cartoony nature of the characters

back in 2012 when i 1st play b1, i first though it was a fallout-ish game, since i've finished fallout new vegas and looking forward for more shooty modern-scifi exploration crafty game in post apocalyptic world. i was 1st very disappointed that b1 had no crafting system... its more like a diablo 2 looter shooter fps (really wished it had official optional 3rd person mode) with mad max-y setting and wacky over the top characters but also with gritty dark undertones. started to somewhat enjoy b1 when i play as roland jumping around shooting alpha skags with shotguns.

but i really started immersing myself fully when i play b2 with gaige and dt. i can't exactly described it, but imo gaige represent the spirit of the franchise best. she had badass teenage sci-finess, 4-thwall breaking fun nonchalant overthetop violence (against baddies only), dorky nerd humor, and not really serious anarchist vibe that feels like she knows her world is just a game and just want to help players wreak havok casually with her gamey anarchy power plus with her frequently malfunctioning robot buddy (seriously i think gearbox intentionally left dt to be very flawed and buggy to mess up with players). i can't really enjoy any borderlands games anymore if i can't play with gaige+dt.

b tps was okay with claptrap, but the space atmosphere in the moon, spaceships and claptrap's simulation was most likely the best space tourism experience borderlands can offer. pity's fall and hyperion lunar space station comes to mind. though the absence of jetpack gameplay is quite disappointing (jetpack scavs laugh trollishly).

tales from the borderlands had funny moments. but i personally was very disappointed gaige wasn't included. what a huge waste of potential. its just for fans of rhys, fiona, sasha, zer0 and jack.

b3 crush my heart with how the writers treated returning non b3 characters. especially gaige. i only watch lets plays and lore videos of it, probably won't play it ever. though from what i've seen, gameplay was definitely better than b2+tps, but for many veteran borderlands players late game mayhem runs feels too easy and legendaries drop too easily everywhere. i have to say though, the handsome jackpot dlc was probably the best part of b3 i liked (especially the soundtracks, very tps-ish and jack-ish). though once again, them not including gaige in the jackpot dlc was another huge waste of potential since it had heavy theme about jack's secret robot army factory and timothy cutting off his arm. they just use it as another dlc for that fake clown mary sue moxxi (like she didn't need even more attention as borderlands mascot...). safe to say, i refuse to accept b3 canon and just treat b2+tps+tftb as the stasis status quo of the franchise lore. i had a strong feeling that in b4 gearbox would cut off many classic borderlands characters from the story and just focus more on gameplay.

b2 and maybe tps is the only borderlands that i replay occasionally these days. though nowadays i prefer to just mod gaige and dt into various other games because i feel like i don't feel the borderlands charm as strongly anymore as back in 2012-ish... modding gaige using bolt gatling gun in dynasty warriors 8 empires was more appealing to me at the moment. or just have her relax doing shenanigans like maniacally laughing as she causes storms with weather machines or pranking psychos with electric handshakes in the sims 4 modded...

THE GUNS!!!!!!!!!!! And the different combinations of gear/ rolls that work well together depending on the build. Finding that "♥♥♥♥ yeah" roll on a "hell yeah" item is priceless...
844hrs of fun so far.

BL1: new take on the FPS genre, decent characters and class system

BL2: funny writing, better music, awesome DLC's

Pre-sequel: pretty meh tbh

BL3: i intentionally waited for the EGS beta-test to be over, annoying villians (just pure cringe)

tales series: didn't play, not into that type of game.

wonderlands: won't buy.

For me the appeal of Borderlands is that it is an easy, fun loot-em up. If I want some good shooting action but I'm too tired or otherwise inebriated to want to perform anywhere close to my peak, Borderlands is a perfect option.

If you just follow a point and shoot stuff the loot will inevitably find its way to you. Using your brain may be helpful but the game never encourages it.

The other part of course is the unique loot. It is a wonderful retreat from those other games where balance is law. Balance is vaguely there but it mainly takes a backseat in favour of variety. Pick whatever weird build you want. You will only get dumpstered if you fall asleep at the keyboard. However those that delude themselves into thinking their is such a thing as a 'PvE expert' can still try to min-max if they want.

The only thing that does turn me away is the dialogue. It is suffocating, even in contrast to every other franchise entry. They struck a good balance when Handsome Jack was the main guy who would go off on tangents, but now they milk it with every character you meet, and they hold your objective markers hostage until they are done. I can smell the desperation in their attempts to be funny.

Claptrap hitting his head on the gate in BL1s tutorial was funnier than anything I've seen or heard in this game so far.

When the first game came out I found the unique, cel-shaded graphics appealing. Online co-op campaign games were an even more rare breed than these days as well, so I stuck with it until we saw the ending becuse it was something I could play with my friends.

Borderlands 2 I dropped right off because my friends were a few levels above me and as such all the enemies were massive bullet sponges to me while the rest of the party blazed ahead.

This one is alright. The shooting feels up to acceptable standards and Tediore turrets never gets old. I almost dropped off it after the first session, but I found I actually enjoyed the game after I turned voice volume to 0 and just rummage through loot while plot stuff happens for the party.

To answer the topic: It's a thing I can do with my friends. The spectacle of guns that turn into grenades that split into heat-seeking missiles helps too.

BL2 was my first BL title, and I didn't pick it up until after all of the DLC was released.

I really enjoyed the main story line and the side quests. The DLCs were OK as were the headhunters mini DLCs. A great draw was the NPC dialog. Playing Gaige and comparing guns and she says, ahhhh, I wan't BOTH!! Or you get rezed by Axton and he says, I won't tell anyone. The little quips and banter are great. The best part is of course Jack. He is such a ^$%# and is so open about about. The voice acting for Jack was excellent and should have won an award.

The multitude of guns, grenades, shields, relics, and quests made it very replayable. BL2 has been installed since 2014 and I still play it solo and with friends. As my very short BL2 review states, "I still play it, that's how good it is".

BL1 - I bought it on sale, tried it, and uninstalled it within an hour. It just didn't have the same feel as BL2. Maybe BL2 spoiled me.

TPS - I played it though to the end and enjoyed it. The moon location and lack of oxygen was a different mechanic you had to master. The Cryro weapons were my favorite. Jacks backstory, how he rose to power and took over Hyperion, how different loader, and gunner bots were created was the icing on the cake. It answered so many questions I didn't know I wanted to ask. The downfall is lack of replayability. I just didn't have a desire to play it again after it was finished. But, if you have never played it, you really should at least once.

BL3 - I just picked it up, started playing it, and it's a mixed bag. I hate a lot of things about it and like some others.

The auto loot function in SP acts like BL2 MP which is great.

The zillion extra attributes added to guns, weapons, and shields makes selecting a load out a PITA. I spend more time in the inventory screen comparing items than I do playing the game. Hey devs, ever hear of KISS?

What really chaps my chaps is the legendary RNG drop rate. I bought a legendary infinity pistol at level 4! Then a legendary shield, then a legendary grenade mod. WTHay? I feel like i'm being given participation trophies just for playing. Wheres the challenge????

The small maps are too crowded. Bring back BIG maps. Nuff said.

The gun play is fun like BL2 but the writing and stories are a lot cruder. It's like it was made by 13 year olds FOR 13 years olds. Hey, look at me in my underwear! He stole my undies!!! Kill em!!!!

I'm level 8 and will continue playing for a while to see how it goes.

Telltales - never played any, no intention of playing any.

Tiny Tina's wonderland - I liked Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep DLC for BL2 so may buy this when it goes on sale.

Honestly, it's pretty much THAT it's a super casual friendly, pick-up-and-play Diablo game.

Started back with Borderlands 1, but aside from Nostalgia I could never go back to playing the older games. They're dead and gone in my mind, because the mechanical feel of the game is so much better now.

it's pretty much that the borderlands series is a super casual friendly, pick-up-and-play Diablo game.

Diablo 3 was the only other ARPG that really nailed this in the modern age for me. Too many burden their systems down with inane levels of mechanics that all equate out to "Use a build or you can't play endgame".

Diablo 3 and Borderlands 3 are both interesting enough to play through with various builds, but you don't have to spend 5~2000+ hours scouring spreadsheets to figure out if you can make it to a boss or not. Hell, you get into stuff like Path of Exile and even after 500 hours, I still couldn't remotely tell you how to start a build of your own. I could GUESS what sounds good from a basic RPG standpoint, but I'd have no idea about the thousands of mechanics that get crammed in over the years.

I just want to get stuck into the combat and bosses and keep them coming as quickly and cleanly as possible.

Give me the least amount of pointless wandering possible, with the most amount of combat and looting? And I'm happy. Keep the skill trees snappy, easy to respec and fun instead of "stat-heavy"? and you've got my erection. And my attention :Zaglol:

It's not my cup of tea to spend more time IMAGINING how good a build is compared to actually getting stuck in, getting the grind on, and trying things out.

Really, the only reason I don't play Destiny 2 (Since I prefer MP over SP) is because of their shady DLC practices, removing content and all. And Borderlands 2 and TPS are alright, but they're not as good as 3. I honestly don't think anyone with two brain cells to rub together could actually look at borderland's writing across any of the games and go "Yeah, that's what makes me keep playing. The WRITING."

It's worth a "forceful exhale of the nostril" on occasion, and when the character's shut up and it's just combat noises, it's usually pretty good. And some NPC's are acted humanly enough to get the job done.

Like if I had to really dig deep and pull from memory 5 relatable characters that I would want to have as my vault hunter crew, across all of borderlands as a series, it'd STILL be tough to fill those seats.

And, honestly, I gotta say it:

Borderlands 2 is overrated as hell. It's a boring slog through repetitive environments with an overplayed villain who comes off about as interesting as the Skag I ran over 3 games ago. People rant and rave about Handsome jack, but he's EXTREMELY one note and I'd have to imagine the only reason it sticks so prominently in peoples minds was because Borderlands, to it's credit, is one of an extremely rare breed of games.

True looter shooters are hard to come by, believe it or not. Ones that people actually want to play anyways.

However, GAMEPLAY wise? Boi Borderlands 3 And Tina's. Any day of the week, I'll start a fresh new character just to play with people. Any time any where, I'll roll something up for the helluvit. It's absolutely the casual nature of the games that drew me in, and will keep me coming back for ages.

In many ways Borderlands as a series is a continuation of an idea that could possibly have started with a game called Hellgate:London where in you could play through the normal Diablo style ARPG but in first person. It wasn't fleshed out there, but the roots obviously had an effect on Gearbox who took the idea of a first person ARPG style game and asked "what if we added more fps to the fps-arpg?"

Borderlands 1 is fun but sometimes feels like a proof of concept, when Borderlands 2 hits the scene it's a significantly more refined version of the same idea that many who love the series still say hasn't been topped anywhere else.

The short and narrow version of why people like it is because it's got enjoyable shooting mechanics, interesting loot to collect, with classes that can have a wide varieties of builds sometimes centered around the interactions of just 2 pieces of gear, like the Bee shield and....everything.

Fun things are fun I guess.

ah. hellgate london. what a pity its been abandoned in the hand of uncaring company. playing that game (the very flawed single player steam version) made me realize there's one thing i dislike in borderlands games is that there's very limited variety of active skills and usable items that could be accessed through skill slots like in typical diablo-ish rpg. wish there's some options to buy extra support like mercenaries, drones or tamed beasts for every characters. torchlight 2 and its great mods had spoiled me.
