Can't open Golden Chest in Sanctuary

I may have missed a pop-up or something but I've been playing for 10+ hours now and I can't open the Golden Chest in the Sanctuary ship. Is it locked until later in the game or is my session bugged out?

its a lootbox that you use golden keys given by shift. You can look up permanent codes to give you keys and the stuff in the chest will be leveled to you and will be purple or better gear

iirc you can also buy keys

Yeah, I know that. I've redeemed keys from Shift as well but every time I visit Sanctuary, the chest is locked. In BL2 the chests were always available for use but here, I just can't figure it out..

Okay, I figured it out. Despite having redeemed Golden Key codes, they weren't added to my inventory. I had to go open a mail, just to add them to my account. Effing irritating.

Yeah, you need to take them from the mail. Same for many cosmetics, special weapons, etc :)
