Connection Timed Out

As the title says, me and my friend are having this issue. We can't connect to each other (we did it once though, but it was short lived, until he disconnected). Each time we try to connect, either through Steam or Shift, the same error appears. We tried:
opening ports,
restarting Steam,
switching Steam to offline,
connecting through Shift
connecting through Steam
unlink Shift
If anyone has any other solution, please do be kind and share. Thanks.

Yah this is a P2P connection issue with Shift, only works if both side has good connection.
You can try Redmin VPN and play LAN mode but I am not sure how it works these days used to work fine with EU-AUS coops. Guide [radmin-club.com]

EDIT: sometimes, the game allows us to play, but for a short period of time. Another problem is that the one who is joining has a high ping, but we live practiclally next to each other. I hope they do something about it, coop in this state is literally unplayable.

I found a solution that has worked for me everytime so far.

From the main menu press Y (on xbox), then click on the symbol with two little silhouettes and a green + symbol.
Invite your friend.
They must accept that invite from either their main menu or pause menu in game.

A hologram of their character will appear next to yours on the main menu until they are in.

We where disconnected an hour later and couldn’t join mid game again but this method worked instantly.

One if us us playing on Xbox one and the other on Steam.
