New to BL3 and I came across this weapon with "unlimited mag size" which will eventually heat up and break.

Can someone explain this to me with more detail, as the mag doesn't look unlimited.

It's a CoV brand maker gun.
Unlimited just means you don't have to reload for (usually) a long time, because instead of the magazine being 4-20 bullets it's a higher number like 50-80.

If you fire continuously for that amount tho, it "heats up" and you have to cool it down - eg, reload (edit - usually a longer reload time than average). But you could fire a bit, pause, fire a bit etc. to delay the "heating up" limit - theoretically meaning you'd never have to reload. In practice it rarely works out that way tho, ofc.

COV weapons "unlimited mag size" just means that they don't have to reload like every other manufacturer. They'll overheat, and break if you fire them for an extended amount of time though, which is their version of reloading.

COV manufacturer guns:

These weapons also do not have a magazine; instead they pull ammunition directly from the weapon's pool and never need to be reloaded. The weapons feature a heat gauge that heats up as the weapon is continuously fired. If this gauge reaches its limit, the weapon will "break" and must be fixed.

What I love is the cooling down animation during their "reload." Spraying it down with a water bottle or whatever depending on chr. class. It's amusing. :steamhappy:

It seems like when you allow the weapon to cool down, it doesn't regenerate its full mag size. How long does it take to fully load it up again?

The magazine size is whatever ammo for that gun you have left.

So if you have full ammo (example) of 1400, as you shoot/expend ammo, the magazine size shrinks as your actual ammo does, until you have zero.

So what would be the benefit of the unlimited magazine size?
I would've assumed this gun to be similar to the infinity in BL2, except with a heat meter.

No reload if you manage heat.
And even if you run the gun to breaking, it's a lot of ammo compared to a clip.
You can switch the gun off to anther gun and it will cooldown and you can switch back to advoid the repair animation too.

Like a CoV pistol can have between 53~100+ shot before it needs a "reload" animation and if you not firing it will start to cool down on it's own.

Vladof pistols known for large ammo clips have 15~35+ ammo clips that may be increased maybe anther 20% by gun accessories.

Point is if you want to not worry about reload interruptions CoV the way to go.

The Infinity is in BL3 too as well as another free ammo gun called "Extreme Hangin' Chadd", it just always replaces the one bullet in chamber free so it never needs to reload ammo from your ammo pool.

And to be clear, when a COV gun overheats and "breaks", it does not mean your gun becomes useless or dropped. It's just part of the "reloading" animation then you can keep shooting.

I first thought this on game launch and was like "WTF? I'll never use COV guns then if they just break". lol

Yeah it was odd, it looked like your character sprinkles water on the gun or something!
