LowLevelFatalError- D3D Device Being Lost

Above is the link to the error I keep experiencing while attempting to play this game.

Here are my PC specs:

GPU- 1080 TI
Mobo- MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
Ram- 16g Corsair RGB 3200
PSU- Corsair 1000W Platinum
CPU- AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

I keep experiencing this fatal error while the game attempts to retrieve my account information, causing the game to freeze and have to be forced closed via task manager.

I have done the following:

1- Uninstalled/Reinstalled the game
2- Verified the cache
3- Performed a clean install of all drivers for Bios/GPU/CPU
4- Adjusted the Launch settings via Steam
5- Adjusted the 3D settings via Nvidia Control Panel
6- Disabled all OC and Third Party Programs (GeForce Experience)
7- Downloaded Epic Games Launcher to update Unreal Engine (no idea why people suggest this)

I am at a loss... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I am not very tech savvy.

go to,

submit a request, tell them you crashed, and give them your crash reports, logs, dxdiag.txt and the error info. (& time).

Thank you @Baz78 for that suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't resolve the issue, so I have forwarded the support ticket to 2K to see if they are able to assist.

I will still leave this here, because it seems a lot of people are having this issue and it's very hard to resolve. I think a conversation needs to be had to bring awareness, ya know?

Disable steam overlay firstly and if not already switch to windowed borderless. This fixed the issue for me with that same error.

Those are great original suggestions. I disabled the overlay and was able to actually see the title screen for once, but it did just crash again with the same error. No solution, unfortunately.

Update: I was contacted by 2K and told to disable Firewalls and update DirectX by going:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared_CommonRedist" > Find and run DXSETUP.exe

Unfortunately, these suggestions also didn't solve the issue. Going to send them a video of the crash along with some diagnostics and we'll see what they say.

I'll keep everyone posted. :) Thanks for joining the discussion, everyone

Having the same issues! I'm losing my mind! I can't even get to the tutorial without it freezing.

Yes, I wanted this game for a while and was very excited about the free trial for 6 days... but it's looking pretty tragic, so far. Hopefully, we can get this resolved before the trial period ends!

I switched off volumetric fog and screen space reflections and it hasn't crashed yet like it always did before. That might work for you too.

Try setting your Windows power options to High Performance. Or if you want to be more specific, go into the power options and turn PCI Express: Link State Power Management: off. I had an issue where Windows was reducing the power to my GPU at inopportune times and this caused BL3 to crash. My crashflow was different than yours (my game would run for a bit and then crash to desktop), but it's so easy to try that you might as well. YMMV but I hope this helps you.

Unfortunately, I can't even get far enough into the game to get to the options menu T-T

@BilvetWidget, Great catch and suggestion! It looks like my PC is on ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE. Kinda sarcastic because I didn't even know Ultimate was an option lol. I checked and the PCI Express setting is OFF fortunately. Unfortunately, there was nothing for me to change, but I hope this suggestion helps others. :)

If you can't switch off volumetric fog and screen space reflections in the menu you can always do it in GameUserSettings.ini located in: C:\Users\[your username]\Documents\my games\Borderlands 3\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

Make sure to create a copy of that file before changing it!

Open the file and scroll down to where volumetric fog and SSR is located and change them to:

VolumetricFogMode=Off
ScreenSpaceReflectionsMode=Off

Do I need a specific application/program to read these files in the WindowsNoEditor folder? When I click the files, they open in notepad and are completely blank.

I didn't need a special application, it should look like this:

Yes, I actually went back in to see if I could find it, and it was under the GameUserSettings.Ini file.

I was able to turn off Volumetric Fog and it actually got to the part of the title screen where I got to choose whether I wanted crossplay or not. HOWEVER, it did crash after asking for a username.

While this was the furthest I have been in the game, it was not the solution I needed. I'm sure it will help others, though! Thank you for the suggestion :)
