do you have cloud save enabled? that sh*t can cause it, besides that maybe the old bug really returned.
Either way I manually backup saves after each play session like it's part of my job. Because I had to manually recover a corrupted character save file and it almost didn't work. The power went out while I was playing. IDK why they can't use proper redundancies for auto saving games these days? I mean FFS it's 2020. And yeah the power can still go out sometimes along with the internet. So many other auto saving games that don't have that problem. SMH
I don't think cloud save can cause it but I know people blame it a lot. Cloud save just creates a problem where the corrupted save file gets backed up and overwrites the non corrupted save info after syncing. Since syncing happens when you close the game, the corrupted saves have now auto overwritten the non corrupted saves. Steam can't tell if a save is intact or not.
So if a game has a terrible auto save / corruption problem then yeah turning off cloud sync may help prevent the corrupted files being backed up and overwriting. Should still keep manual backups if you wanna be real careful.
