Disk write error during update - missing game exe file
Updated the game today and after making it to the initial Claptrap loading screen after the Gearbox logo, it crashed to my desktop. Steam then said a 200mb update was required. Installed that, and was greeted with an executable file missing error and another 199mb update. tried to install it and am now getting a disk write error.

ETA: The games EXE file is missing entirely.

Yikes, backup important files!
Run chkdsk /f (whatever the switch is to fix errors)
Reboot
Use Steam to verify files
Cross fingers & toes

That's the thing. I've updated a few other games today and everything installed fine. Other games run fine too.

ETA: I went through the directory Steam > steamapps > common > Borderlands 3 > Oakgame > binaries > win64. Win64 is where the game exe file should be and it's empty.

Even with an ssd drive you can get bad sections and until something like chkdsk marks it as bad, Windows will keep trying to use it

I'm running it now just to make sure. I really don't think it's the drive though. I went back through the discussion pages and it sounds like gearbox has been pushing out unstable and broken stuff recently.

Eta: Disk is fine. Did a game file validation and it said one file failed to validate, so it's on the devs end of things.

Ok, so I'm gonna try to just reinstall the whole blasted thing. See if that fixes this.

That’s weird, I’ve had files not validate & it would just redownload them. Even on purpose like when I’d break my BL2 exe trying to enable mods. Just delete it & validate would d/l a fresh copy

If an exe is missing - it's your AV software.

Nite69 Jun 16, 2020 @ 10:11pm
Thats either your AV software or a hardrive failing (corrupted data) problem

and yes SSD's can fail too but only after so many writes are done to them, most now days have a 5 year warranty with a 300 or 600 TBW limit

AV software is Avast. Never had an issue with it. Other stuff installs fine. Did a check disk and everything is ok. Validated the game files, and the single exe would not download. Steam said they'd be recovered, but nothing happened.

Attempted to redownload last night, and got the same problem. Just the one file is missing. There was a steam common redstributables file that was 56mb that downloaded too. I saw it yesterday, but for some reason it was 0kb in size.

I went in and deleted the entire game file, so I get to start from scratch.

Have you tried turning off the AV completely just to test if thats what it is? It might be detecting the exe as a false possitive its a common issue especially with games

disable AV for 10 minutes go in and add to exceptions. my AV was reading it as a false postive and had to do so not even 5 minutes ago

Webroot SecureAnywhere doesn't do that, or make such measures necessary. It's kind of costly, but after years of using "the best" freeware, and paying for utter crap like MacAfee and Norton, I learned my lesson. I haven't been hit with a virus for eleven years, and it never messed with any of my games, never gave me any false positives.

Thanks for the heads up! Disabling Avast for 10 mins and hitting updating the game again in Steam got me the file in 0.1 sec and I could run it.
