I know what you mean thou. The worst thou is when on top of the enemy dying that second before, you realize it was splash and your own element damage bonuses that finished yourself.
Moze player knows that issue or The Lob. I don't know how often I've blown myself up with that weapon by just walking into the ball. xD
For me it was just siren and a corrosive torque weapon (some may guess which one). A point blank shot, and all the elemental bonuses carried it clean thru all the shield and health.
Remember, Torque weapons explode. As to the question as whether point blank shots hurting self mattering or not. Yes, sometimes it definitely does....
Try using the Blackhole Shield or singularity grenades with Moze when in FFYL. If it's just a certain area you need to get through it might help. Had it happen many times. Sniping me from across the map behind cover with perfect accuracy & I can't use cover like they can.
This game really could've benefited from a cover system. Even in Mass Effect 2 you could use cover, had shields & powers too. Wolfenstein TNO had cover. At least Zane has a deployable shield like the OWL in Killzone Shadow Fall.
Not always. Also he often doesn't or won't attack even when using the attack command. It's like his default AI is set to "♥♥♥♥ you" instead of "aggressive" & no option to set his default behaviour.
I use the smg Jabber and havent had that attack command issue. Granted Im fully skilled into the green tree, fade away, and damage boosts on the red tree with just one skill point invested in the pet revive for defense. I only attack command as an after thought when I feel like mixing it up a tiny bit and I do get a small issue where he occasionally just rockets a wall cause he doesnt case if theres an obstacle when he a. commands.
As far as reviving he's gotten to me every time I've gone down provided he wasn't also down. Which is only a problem with boss fights that have "non-player insta kill mechanics."
I just noticed it last night, but for example the heart boss of dlc2 will insta kill the pet with a tentacle slam, or the explosion when you kill the boss. My pet can normally stand up to badasses and other bosses without dieing, and often feels like he can take more punishment than me, but not these two hits.

Pet AI directs him to run right into range of the red death AOE around wotan despite my pet being ranged.
That or he kills something and second winds me. I like the playable characters a lot but FL4K is 10/10 topchad.
Yay, there is that. First fight I had to cheese some Lob/Fade bs to clear. Otherwise, he only fails to revive me if he is dead or I move away.
I mean as Zane you can just res yourself by sacrificing your clone.
