She doesn't do that millions of damage out of stealth blitz that Zero does, nor is she as purely non stop punchy punch as brick, but she does seem to have that balance to both blitz and pummel at a more middle of road variety.
Also where as they got most of their melee damage purely from the melee tree, Amara will want more of a multiple tree balance, when it comes to the melee. It becomes highly advisable to not just develop that brawl tree, but also get elemental up enough for the additional element added to melee and an extra 75%. You may want to get the blue tree up enough for ascendent and sap (which will make the action skill trigger 50% lifesteal, as well as being the one modification to the active, that doesn't lower its base damage).
Also, don't forget to use cryo weapons on melee builds. Remember, frozen enemies take more melee damage. Freezing, before blitzing on the melee attack, makes it that much more assured that the blitz is lethal and instantly recharges.
At first, I had to depend on guns quite a bit; but later on, I seldom used a gun except for bosses and flying targets. I started carrying the Psycho Stabber as soon as I got it, for the +120% melee. Blitz was not on cooldown very often, though some super badasses were tough to melee. I liked to soften those up first with the Face-puncher or a Porcelain Pipe Bomb.
Early on, I used Phaseslam quite a bit and liked to mix up its element to match the targets. Later on, though, Phaseslam wasn't very important. I seldom used it and never bothered changing its element.
Anyway, that's my Amara story. Good times.
It's basically as bad as meleeing eridium crystals, I usually swing like an idiot once or twice with normal melee before the game recognizes OH IT'S ERIDIUM WE NEED THIS DIFFERENT ANIMATION!
Wish they fixed it, but I doubt they will. This is gearbox after all.
Ya I wish they would've just made it to where your melee weapon just gets some kind of new Eridium looking "upgrade" on it instead of an entirely new melee weapon thing.
