Corrupted save files
Hey guys!

So the power supply of the whole block went out today while I was playing and I got back to a full reset on my character due to a corrupted save file? Has anyone been able to recover from this on a Windows 7? I found guides for Windows 10, but nothing for 7.

And also, what's the difference between my PC shutting down as per the power outage and the game simply crashing and bringing up a report form for Gearbox? The game "shuts down" in the same way, right? Why would one corrupt my save file and the other not do so? Does anyone have a logical explanation? >.<

I don't have a cloud sync or save enabled and my save files don't have a .tmp or .sav extension. They just have numbers for my characters such as "1" or "2" or "3". I haven't been able to find a recovery due to that.

I'd appreciate it if someone comes back with a useful answer so I can highlight it and hence help all the other people who search for the same.

Thanks!

My guess is that the game was actually writing the save-file while the power turned off, this means the game wasn't able to finish the writing of the save-file, so the old data got overwritten, but nothing got saved because the power went off before. You can check the filesize of your save, if it's like 1-20kb i feel sorry for you, because there's no data left to recover. My advise would be activating the cloud sync or writing a small script which backups your saves now and then to be completely safe.

Edit: do you have the option to show all extensions turned on? Windows usually hides known extensions.

Suschi, thanks for your answer. I consequently found out how to show the extensions on the files yes. It was an option from my control panel that was turned off.

I do have cloud sync enabled, but that only helps with games that support cloud saves. Borderlands 3 has a local save system that the game manages as it runs. That's a bummer.

After reading numerous topics and threads both here, on the official forums and on any video material I could find - it turns out I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥, right in the ass.

To all the players ending up here - God forbid your game crashes or your power goes down.
To prevent this from affecting you - it's up to you to SAVE your SAVE files every now and then. This sounds so ridiculous...

Here's the path to find them:

Open a file browser -> Libraries -> Documents -> My Games -> Borderlands 3 -> Saved -> SaveGames -> "that long gibberish folder" -> Save files are inside, just archive them and start your game.
Next session you do, just do another archive and delete the old one.

Hopefully Gearbox will open their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pockets soon and start paying for a cloud saving service like every other decent studio. Jesus, this got me mad... I lost 60 hours of progress. It's like they cut my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arms and gouged my eyes out!

Please someone quote this in a reply so I can mark it as the answer to the thread. Thanks!
