I seem to have a problem where my game defaults to LAN only mode, no matter how many times I've played before. Shift won't acknowledge I am online (without going and logging in via browser, at least) unless I let the game look for LAN games in social first, then setting the network options to whatever other online mode after it has sat around checking for LAN games on a LAN that doesn't particularly exist. Why I need to look for LAN games first, I don't know. Sadly the game doesn't keep that setting in place, so every time I start it, it's its own little ritual.
Give that a try, or maybe try logging into Shift in a browser if you don't mind tabbing out and keeping the browser open for the purpose. When I did that the first time, it threw me back into offline after I closed the browser window, so I kept on messing with stuff until I found how the LAN game then network option stuff seemed to work without opening a browser.
For a co-op game, playing with friends has not been an easy road to walk for me.
I bring all this up because it sounds like my particular problem, but I've yet to see any other mentions of it.
With respect to net traffic, I've so far been able to get the game to let me onto Shift SOMEhow every time, but every SINGLE time has been a chore.
