Borderlands 3

Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost.
Game started crashing recently with this showing the in the crash log. Was able to put about 26 hours into the game and now its happening consistently after being in the game for about 5/10 minutes.

<ErrorMessage>LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 200] Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost. (Error: 0x887A0006 - 'HUNG')</ErrorMessage>

Any ideas to the cause? Currently only happening with BL3, able to play other games with no issues which run heavier.

Tried:
-Window vs Full screen
-DX 11 and DX 12
-Verifying game files
-Under clocking GPU and CPU
-Putting all settings to low and capping FPS at 60
-Updating/downgrading GPU drivers and also clean install with DDU
-Disabled NVIDIA battery boost
-Windows is up to date
-Checked heat, GPU floats around 45/50C and CPU 55/60C, nothing hot enough to cause issues. I generally run at a solid 60 FPS with no problems

Specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz (Boost to 3.5GHz)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M - 4095MB
DDR4-2132

Any other suggestions or is anyone else running into a similar issue?

May have fixed this. Did a regedit under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > GraphicsDrivers > Added a new registry key for DWORD (32-bit) Value > Named TdrLevel > left values at 0 and restarted PC.

Haven't crashed yet - been running for about an hour.

Did this manage to fix it?

It came back a couple days after doing this. Not sure the cause anymore as it only happens in this game - reinstalled/repaired tried a bunch of things, just gave up.

Playing with the power plugged in seems to fix it for most people. If that doesn't work try to disable NVIDIA overlay if you got that enabled.

Hey man, I've got my power plugged in as well as the overlay disabled. I've changed registry values, changed graphics settings, nothing has worked so far.

Seems some people are getting these problems since the last update. My PC never crashes on Doom Eternal, Grid, you name it, stable.
But, I can't even get past the first logo on startup, then error message which I sent.

I thought it may be Nvdia drivers but seems thats not the case. I guess a patch is needed, may be wrong, but can't think of anything else.

I'll just play other games until this is fixed. Of course I have done all the normal stuff verify files blah blah, time wasted, still the same. Also did a reg fix, which didn't fix anything. Sheesh!!

disabling full screen optimizations in the actual executable of borderlands
D:/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Borderlands3\OakGame\Binaries\Win64

Right click borderlands3.exe -- go to properties --> compatibility
then tick the box where it says 'Disable Fullscreen Optimization'

I don't know much about this, but back when i had a horrible PC It came in handy to run certain games my setup previously would not have been capable of.

This worked great, playing with my buddy now o7
hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the idea. All helps. Having said that, I haven't played it since before the date of my previous post! What a waste.

Well, not a fully waste, but I was so very impressed with BL2 Gold, and tweaked it for Ultra graphics with no cartoon lines everything, it looked great.
Mainly though the game play and fun of BL2 is something special. Didn't get that with my few hours in BL3.

I am glad you posted. Time for me to uhhh re-install and take it for a spin. Thanks again.

I decided to get back to B3 after some time - at first it was fine but then all the fatal errors, oak stuff, etc started happening.

None of the steps from different threads helped.

It got worst after some overclocking on the GPU so I decided to roll back to defoult settings (no overclock on the GPU). Works like a charm.

Did some testing - something they did along the way coused the game to really dislike OC on GPU. There is a small treshold where it works (you can have OC and play the game, it may crash though) BUT the performance is worse... Like you have more computing power but the fps were lower and there were some graphicall issues.

So long story short - no OC on GPU. Have fun killing baddies:)

+1 restore OC settings to default fixed it for me. Thanks buddies!
