Why are people saying the story is bad?
The Calypsos are obnoxious but they're supposed to be.

Even if you don't like them the side quests shine in so many ways.

I just completed a quest from a guy named Gonner Maleggies and it was funny as hell. I'm loving it so far.

I feel like most of the people saying "ewww Cringe" are just trying to look "above" the humor. Sometimes dumb humor can be entertaining. If you want an Oscar-Worthy RPG story there's hundreds of games out there.

BL has always had sophomoric and inane humor.

They wanted to smear the great firehawk.. but they didn't leave her alive, they wanted their minions to kill her they even say it in the cut scene.
With the vault thieves coming to her rescue?? She knows they will save her, this is why she almost killed Lilith before Troy made them look weak because he needs her powers to stay alive.

She had no idea we'd save her we might have been killed as well, thats what they thought.

They killed off too many loved characters in one go, lilith sacrificing herself was lazy IMO, maya dying was unnecessary so early on, if anything that should have been the end of the game big event.
The calypso twins weren't written very well, they didn't have any depth beyond AAAARGH stupid dad grrrr.
The entire game seems very same phase the whole time, as opposed to bl1 and bl2 where the story was broken into segments.
Just the way i saw it, once you've played the story a few times its a bit better.

'Cause none of it makes any sense.

Either Maya would have faced the twins alone, same outcome, or they would have locked you and Maya in the Vault. Ava had nothing to do with the twins showing up, not knowing that they were going to show up and why they were gong to show up is what went wrong. Ava still feels forced, but what happened to Maya isn't her fault.

Looks like they could have escape but Ava has to open her big mouth

It's weird how people praise Borderlands 1 and 2 for somehow not being cringy, yet 3 is, because 3 is the only one out of the series thus far to make references to memes/trends that aren't years behind. The forced enthusiasm of the Twins is a plague among streamers because that's what gets people clicks, and their manipulative behavior is what gets them a following in BL3.

People just search for things to be unhappy about, honestly. BL3's humor isn't "lulz teh randum" like people love to say it is, it references memes people are STILL unironically making popular videos/posts about, and characters aren't just going "haha cheese monkeys XD", they're acting ridiculous, but not ' tehpenguin of d00m' random.

3 is the first game out of the series that felt to me like the creators were actually keeping track of internet culture as they developed the game/wrote dialogue. The rest, while still funny to me, were still outdated the day they released.

Oh yeah, and the story's just fine. Outrage culture is a big thing right now, it'll pass - that and nostalgia goggles for 1 and 2, but that'll never stop being a thing. Case in point, that one early response to your question that was like "it just seems not as high of quality". Yeah, great point - "it's not as good because it's not as good!"

Peeps don't know what they want, yet here they are, playing the game. Trust me, it's just people looking for excuses or "outgrowing" Borderlands' humor and trying to ♥♥♥♥ on the series for not somehow still having that "new" spark to it that they felt when they first played 1 or 2. They don't wanna own up to the very real possibility that maybe they're just tired of Borderlands and nostalgia is all that keeps them enjoying 1 and 2, if they still play those. 3 has no nostalgia, yet has improved on basically everything I found janky and annoying about 1 and 2. That lack of nostalgia is all it takes for the whining to start.

I mean, no? Maya was dumb enough to basically kill herself~
Imagine grabbing a guy who can drain you by touching. You're a siren, not a fkin brawler for Christ sake (oh, hi Amara)

At one time people hated Claptrap, Scooter, Moxxi, Torque, Janey Springs, Pickle, Jack, Lillith, Tiny Tina, Rhys, Fiona etc. Ava outrage is just click bait. I think most player either don't care or don't really mind that much. The Calypso twin is a generation thing. Most Borderland fans started before Twitch streaming became a thing. They aren't part of that culture so the humor goes over their heads. I actually think their random dialog is pretty funny. Borderlands has a certain kind of humor best described as juvenile but it's perfect for a looter shooter where you only care about your builds and pH4t l00t.

The side quests are very good, at the level of the best borderlands.

Story is worse, makes less sense than any other bl game, is less intetesting, harder to follow, less inspired...not so much "cringy" than boring and un inspired.

Dlcs can fix it, I even want a second season pass with more dlcs.

simple, gamers aren't good with words. :d2tidehunter: they are triggered from couple stupid moments(not that they are wrong) and they don't have criticizing skills so they don't bother with everything else and spam "story is bad"
not that I judge.. (don't quote me please) :flowey:

To fix the main story they'd need to do a rewrite just because the current iteration feels like a first draft TBH.

The ideas can work but they'd need to go back and rewrite a lot to actually get it to work better as a story.

I think anyone over the age of 20 would be severely annoyed and bored by 99% of the dialogue in this game.
Chashmodai Mar 18, 2020 @ 4:09am
I think I can safely say that BL3 has the worst writing of any game I've played in the last few years. Not kidding. And the story isn't even one of those "so bad it's funny", like Birdemic or Sharknado, it's just bad.

I mean, prior Borderlands weren't exactly masterfully written either, but they were at least decent. I don't expect much from a game in this series but they really, really dropped the ball with this one.

For all the crap that is going on in our world, and the news getting more and more depressing each passing day, this story...regardless of how stupid it may seem to most does its job by simply allowing me to think about something else. The story I think is fine...not too much different from the ones before it. Story in a game like Borderlands takes a back seat to the loot and gameplay. If the story sucks in Cyberpunk 2077, then by all means complain...you should. In the mean time, as long as Borderlands 3 can make me crack a smile every now and then, then I am all for it. Stay healthy everyone.
