Report a translation problem
It's all based on the order it flashes in (which is the same as the order when creating a zoombini at the start of the game).
For example, hair is "shaggy, ponytail, little hair, flat hair, girl with hat". If the front zoombini is "shaggy hair", the preview will show "ponytail". But if the zoombini in back is "little hair", the final result will actually be "flat hair". Hopefully that explanation makes sense. Basically, you need to convert each attribute to a number between 1 and 5, and add 1 to it for each flashing thing in the sequence, looping around when you pass 5.

Completely agree - finding this issue even with the latest patch that came out this year!
