Built by a friend. Use that as an example for how to really do such a vehicle. Rotors, prop pitch, everything on that goes directly against VTOL nozzles and yet it flies reasonably well.

You can also try to attach weights to pistons and rotors to directly modify the center of mass, but that can get just as complicated, and also reduce performance to an extent on light helos. (Mi-8s won't feel much, though.)

Also note the prop requires XML modding if you want the helo to be larger than a go-kart.
