I don't understand the amount of vitriol for this game i see in the reviews. Some folks just come on to leave their 'not recommended' rating after playing 20 minutes and completely dumping the game forever; these people have not come here to play GRIP. Without getting too conspiratorial, the game was 82% off at the time of writing this review, so a cheap bad review would be plausible. I appreciate the negative reviews that actually have something to say, because GRIP has some issues, but nothing that makes it a poor future racer. My goodness is this game fun.

I'm coming from a long history of futuristic racers, starting with Killer Loop on the PS1, to most recently Redout, which are great games with great soundtracks (historically, future racers I've played have always had bangin' soundtracks, because without them, you simply lose that feeling of speed). GRIP is no exception to either of these qualities. Imagine my surprise when I saw that GRIP supports a custom jukebox!

Game play in GRIP is all about mastering the PLETHORA of courses available, each with their own aesthetic, lore (Yes! Check the game info page on the main menu), and shortcuts. However that's just where the game gets started. GRIP comes with multiple game modes that will challenge how you drive on the circuits. Some modes are specific to pure racing, others are based on raw carnage. Aside from racing, there is a deathmatch mode that plays like it sounds, and a parkour mode called 'Carkour' -- it's essentially a time based obstacle course, quite fun!

Full multiplayer support allows for even more game modes including team racing. Custom tournaments are especially fun if you have a core group you play games with often. Matchmaking in 2021 is not too bad, to get matched with at least one other person, but luckily, you can roll with bots online for as long as you want at any difficulty you're comfortable with while you wait for others to join.

I do recommend playing through the campaign and leveling up a bit to unlock all the extra goodies GRIP has to offer.

Car selection is pretty variable in design, with subtle differences in driving stats to suit your play style. Customization of your vehicle works much like in Rocket League -- personalize your favorite ride and get racing!

I fully recommend GRIP, especially if it is at all on sale. There is lots of fun to be had solo or with friends/strangers. I also recommend, if you do get it, read the guide, learn the tricks, and play some single player matches before really diving in.

There's so much more to this game I haven't even talked about. I don't want to ruin it for anyone just getting started. Get the game and give it a chance!

I usually never leave reviews but I wanted to post my positive review here to help with some of the negative feedback the game has been getting in the last month, due to a steering bug that has since been patched and fixed, which I think is important people know, plus I genuinely love this game.

I've been playing this game for the better part of 2 years, since it was in early access, and honestly it's only gotten better and better. This game absolutely owns, go look at any gameplay footage and you'll see people having a great time, myself included with a Let's Play series I did, just having an absolute blast. It's such an homage to the Rollcage series and you can tell a lot of love has been put into this project. By far the best combat racing experience I've had to date.

Oh and it also has Drum & Bass so it's instantly 10/10 I mean come on

Now that it's just those of us who learned how to do the Macarena the way God intended, from the 6pm local news, I can review this in a way we'll all understand: GRIP is Extreme G. They did it, the mad lads did it, they brought Extreme G into the future. The speed, the power ups, the controls, the feel of the vehicles, even the maps are similar (Though I haven't gone through an upside down farm yet, but maybe that's coming), it all feels like it takes a page out of the Extreme G playbook. (Back before the series got so fast that you had to snorp a rail of Adderall to not be playing a ping pong ball simulator.)

It is really, really fun, just the first few levels had me grinning like a 14 year old again, the graphics are better than anything we had back in the day, and right now, July 28th 2021, the cost to buy GRIP is $5.39 and the federal minimum wage is $7.25, there is way more than an hour's worth of fun to be had here.

On a scale of Mario Kart to Redout, I'd put it about in the middle, which is a really great spot for me. Easy to recommend.

Recommendation for new players: Music to 70% FX to 30% :). Sometimes you have to let the track do the work, don't fight it. This is flowstate type game u gotta tap in to the flow and let ur mind go.

I am bias as owner and fan of Rollcage 1 & 2, but this exceeded my expectations based on some reviews. It also kept true to the vibe of the original series. I think the level design was allot higher quality than I expected and the amount of levels and cars was surprising. Campaign looks as if it will take a while to complete with many tracks and race modes. The soundtrack is just as good or better than the 90's Rollcage OSTs. I saw some reviewers complain about hitting walls, if you're good this will never happen. It is a technical game. People spend 100's of hours learning COD maps, if you want to be a good Grip driver you have to learn the map.

Multiplayer: Not huge, but was enough people online to play several matches on a Sunday. Very good challenge. I did not have any problems and clenching win is very good feeling. Pace between games was good, just no chat.

Level Design 10/10, Soudtrack 10/10, FX 9/10, Gameplay 8/10, Menus 5/10, Multiplayer 7/10

Recommendations:
1. Better Menu Design.
2. Text or Audio Chat in Multiplayer.
3. Show "Best Lap Time" in Multiplayer race round-up.
4. Destructive Environments were much better in original games, in this one not much happens.
5. Allow Song to play after race, into the loading menu and then fade out at tail end of load (for much better listening experience).
6. Have a way to burn pickups without using them (maybe i'm missing something).
7. Keep updating! is a good game and as UE4 developer appreciate the work put into it.

From my time playing this game, I can deeply recommend giving this game a try.

But there is one thing that bothers me though, the dev's kinda abandoned this game. (In my opinion) Now ik a game company shouldn't spend 24/7 on just a single game i understand that, But there is some problems in this game that not many will pick up on.

-Deathmatch with even the highest AI difficulty is way to easy, also very limited amount of maps.

-The jump Mechanic doesn't get much love in this game when it comes to environment, For pretty much all the maps you never need to use the jump feature. (Except for water areas)

-The Campaign is kinda Lack luster and no real lore to it (Which is not a problem for me but might have others a bit bummed out on)

-The leveling system is pretty much just a Stat tracker after Lvl 50, They could of done better with it.

-I wish we got more outer space maps, or possibly a map taken place on a space station.

Even though i did just rat on a game that i play almost every day, i wish the dev's would come back and add just a little bit more to the game.

If you're wondering if you should buy this game, I say you should. I just wish to have a bit more content in the game.

• Great sense of speed and a unique verticality to the racing that adds a lot of depth in comparison to traditional Kart racers.
  
• Very faithful to the original Rollcage game.
  
• Satisfying weaponry compounded by the great visuals of the Unreal 4 engine makes the game look good. ~95% 60fps with my GTX770 on all epic settings outside of post processing which murders the framerate.

• As a Pre-Alpha the game lacks content, no online multiplayer and only 3 race maps, 2 of which are WIP.
  
• Cars slide a bit too easily making it difficult to land after hitting jumps and small bumps.
  
• Track design uses invisible walls a bit too much (mainly in the incomplete maps).

Grip is a fantastic pre-alpha, and it makes me excited to see how the game develops through its time in early access. The driving is satisfying, the combat feels brutal, and the current tracks are all both fun to drive on and beautiful to look at. The only real problems I have with the game outside of current lack of content are more of personal preferences and small balance issues that can and will be fixed throughout the development of the game. Once this game gets multiplayer and a few more tracks this will be a definite buy for those looking for a fun, high skill high depth kart racing experience.

You can set your speedometer to read in Machs. I think that says all you need to know.

In the modern world of gaming, a lot of venerated video game genres have died a slow death - most notably the 90s platformer.

Another genre that suffered the same fate was the combat racer.

And just like the 90s platformer, the combat racer has risen from the grave with GRIP.

I did not grow up in the heyday of these games - I was four years old when Rollcage was released, and the most combat-est of a racing game I played was the PS2's Rumble Racing (which was amazing).

For the longest time, I have been searching for a racing game that was not an uber-realism Gran Turismo wannabe, and here it is. It saddens me when I ask someone if they enjoy racing games, and they say 'no, I don't like Forza or Project CARS'. There is so much more to the genre than having the highest polycount vehicle model.

This is a racing game for people who don't usually play racing games. It's easy to learn but difficult to master. You can play it for 10 minutes, or 100. It's versatile, loud, engaging, and strikes the perfect balance of inducing righteous fury at the guy who hit you with a missile while not making you so angry you quit the game.

Most importantly - it's fun to lose.

For myself, who grew up with Rumble Racing, Motorstorm, Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, and Jak X, I can immediately see that the developers care about what they are doing. The music is amazing, the environments are stunning, the motion blur is excellent, the particle effects are the right mix of sensibility and EXPLOSION. Each sound and visual is tailored so that you know exactly what is happening on screen. As your vehicle gets more damaged, your HUD begins to lose integrity in a fantastically thematic way. The vehicles feel meaty and weighty, and you never feel like a crash was the fault of the physics engine.

We need to prove to the world that games that aren't MOBAs, arena shooters, or freemium microtransaction stores can SUCCEED. Buy this game, and invest in both the future of the game industry and the future of your procrastination time simultaneously.
