I saw the game posted today online and immediately bought it.. Roguelike!!! Space combat!! VR Support (Have seriously been digging Elite with my Vive!!) (I realise now its not complete, but still.. good to see it is in progress)..
But no keymapping and joystick support? wow. That I did not expect...
I gave it a try, then shut it down to come looking for solutions!
Oh well.. I'll give it a shot anyway. Yeah, the mouse can work .. it did work okay in Freelancer... Just would really have preferred to be able to use my G13 + Joystick combo.. dual joysticks that way with lots of buttons to map.
I look forward to seeing it added in the future.. I'm sure most people would expect it for a space game in this day and age.
I've answered my own question with a new post by the Underground devs here. https://descendentstudios.com/community/blog/22/entry-350-happy-penguin-branch-how-the-linux-version-of-du-learned-to-love-joysticks/
They are using a free open source plugin for UE4 that gives them full joystick/HOTAS support.
Yep. Even though I haven't played it in years, I've always thought the most realistic/likely space combat mechanics have actually been in EVE Online all this time.
We won't be aiming, we'll be prioritizing targets. Hell, even now, outside of single or two-man vehicles, chances are the person aiming and firing is NOT the person piloting nor the person giving commands... actually, the person "aiming" and the person "firing" may not even be the same when you think about artillery.
No, it is not. There used to be plenty of arcade style games based around using joysticks or controllers. It real is no "excuse".
Now deciding to build the game fundamentally around mouse and keyboard is a valid design decision. Makes perfectly sense. I am gonna still pass on this game in that case, I like joystick games, sims and arcade or a mix of both, especially space combat games. I don't like them with mouse and keyboard. And I actually don't like them either with controllers. Feels just not right to me.
If it is an FPS, I want a mouse. If it is 3rd person action or adventure, I want a joypad, if it is a fighter I want a fighting stick and for space shooters and other vehicle combat I want my stick or wheel support or I am gonna pass. I have about literal 300 untouched games anyway, I want my games with at least some small chance that I start to actually play them. ;-)
How did it work out for you guys? Thanks for the feedback!
Now that they have added support, I will purchase this game. Thanks for the heads up.
