I think it could be a great idea to have control over all the systems, a la FTL. Sacrifice inertial dampeners and scanners for more power to primary weapons, cut off O2 to make a faster jump, that kind of stuff. Might be a lot of work to implement a system like that though...
Yeah, the devs will not be implementing an on/off feature for the Intertia Dampeners. Being damaged is meant to be an incumbrance, not a benefit. This is why it yells at you when it needs repaired, and why there is no toggle switch.
The mechanics of the game require precision-movement in order to function well. Turning off the Inertia Dampeners is a disadvantage on all accounts, even if it's fun.
...HOWEVER...
Since this seemed to be a pretty decent request back during the Beta, one of the Subroutines was created straight up for this function, with a benefit of reducing collision damage. I implore you all to keep a lookout for the Infinite Drift Subroutine.
