Black holes?
Not sure if they are implemented already, but I would love black holes which could like beam you close to the jump gate or in the next sector.

Hope you consider this.

Common misconception: Nothing can escape a black hole.

Actually, black holes form jets of gamma radiation (and other things) out from their poles. This radiation actually comes from the matter and energy that it sucks in. A black hole loses mass constantly, but the process is very slow, and is usually more than offset by the amount of matter and energy that it can readily feed off of (see: Sag-A).

Why does this happen? It's because of the strikingly similar forms of gravity and electromagnetic forces. Gravity at the event horizon is equal to the acceleration needed to keep a particle that is traveling at 1c in a spherical orbit. The 'singularity' (which actually isn't actually a singularity, as it still has volume) exerts an incredible amount of electromagnetic force on the unfortunate particle. This electromagnetic force, coupled with the extreme tidal forces not only rip the particle apart, but can even rip apart the protons neutrons and electrons into more basic quarks, thus releasing vast quantities of gamma radiation. This gamma radiation circles the 'singularity' for a time (in an unstable orbit) before orbiting right over one of the poles. The poles have different magnetic polarities, and as such they repel the energy. At this point, the gamma radiation is spewed out at relativistic speeds into space.

Theoretically, a black hole that has degradated below 20 solar masses (the fuzzy, theoretical limit between neutron stars and black holes) would actually stay as a black hole, and just evaporate into a micro-singularity, and eventually to nothing.

Black holes aren't the end-all of stellar life, just the end of a cycle.

This explanation is pretty rudimentary, but it serves its purpose.

@whozk "So what you're saying is there's a chane"

Sorry couldn't help myself. :D Was certainly an interesting read.

On one of my play throughs the black hole ate every single ship in the area, like at least 20. It left a ton of credits floating around it, taunting me. I wondered if I could fly close enough to grab them and boost out. I couldn't. It was worth the +3k extra credits to try, tho.

Sucked in. Bad end.

There are usually a couple Dark Matter resources you can pick up, and a few of them are used in weapon making.

Couldn't we just eject the warp cores into the black hole to create an explosion that propels our ship to safety? Oh wait, JJ Abrams didn't do this game. :steamfacepalm::steamhappy:

The dark matter floating around it, how safe is that to collect? Could some of it end up in a lethal area?

I did some mining around the black hole, but the dark matter looks pretty close to the event horizon. It's harder to get anywhere though (not that I need any, don't have the blueprints for it yet).

It would be amazing to implement a graphic effect that simulates the gravitationnal lens effect of the black hole (the fact that a black hole bends the light as an optical lens)

Lol first time i saw one i flew right for it thinking it would take me to a bonus level or something... was a sick run too and when the KIA screen popped up, my jaw dropped... oh well, live (or die) and learn i guess

Flying near a black hole can be tricky.
Just try it, after the first few deaths i never had a dark matter which i could not collect because it was to close.
but this game is still in EA and has problems with item placing sometimes, so it could happen that a dark matter is to close, but if you don't try you can not test your limits and inoring dark matter completly is something you should not do if you have MK2/MK§ blueprints.

That would be a great tagline for a rougelike actually: "Live and learn" - but 'live' is crossed out and 'DIE' is scribbled below it in place.

black hole, a nearly incalculatable super dense mass with gravitational forces strong enough to bend light and ultimately absorb it.

yeah fly into it, there might be 72 virgins on the other side (ready to laugh at you)

does it actually bend light? Or does it bend something else?

:3

Fun Facts with Whozk:

Both time and light are affected in the same way in the presence of gravity. From relativity, we know that gravity can be represented as a 'depression' in space. Light and time merely run along space, but when space is bent, both time and light are contorted, too, thus creating the time dilation and the light lensing effects.
Though it should be stated that gravity has no direct effect on time or light, only space does.

You dont even need to fly in, you just get near those things and you get sucked in, even with boosting out for some of them. I think you can just buy the first scanner update and that will mark them on your map.

If you use the black whole as a gravity assist and swing past it, you can get out every time unless you swung way too clost to event horizon.

If you fly towards it, grab an item and than reverse 180 than you are guaranteed dead as you will lose too much velocity and it will eat you alive!
Does that actually work in this game?
